Tea with AK71: Movie going.

Monday, May 24, 2010

When I was a NSF years and years ago, a common activity in the evenings was to go to Yishun 10 and watch a movie.  In those days, we could buy a stored value card and it was only $5.50 per ticket, effectively.  Then, some criminally minded tech genius found out how to clone the cards and Golden Village stopped the sales of such cards. Pity.

If the camp was not so far away from my home in those days, I might not have gone to the movies so often.  I would have preferred to go home in the evenings, I guess. Since we had to go back to camp by 11.59pm at night, it just didn't make sense for me to make the long commute both ways.

I remember one evening, I went to the cinema and found that I had watched every single movie there was to watch at the time.  Yes, even those which I didn't think I would enjoy, I'd watched. That's how good a customer I was for Golden Village then.  During that time, I got used to watching movies on my own and actually enjoyed it.

I don't go to the movies as often nowadays.  If I do go to the movies, I would go with friends or family. However, I recently watched a movie alone.  That was IP MAN 2.  Watching a movie alone again brought back memories of my NS days. I might watch Shrek 3 alone too.

Hi AK,

My history is more or less the same as you. I would watch a lot of movies with army friends. It was only after knowing my gf that I realised that watching movies alone is a no-no. It was to be frowned upon - a sign of being unwanted.

I do not feel so. There is joy in being with one's own company. I watched a lot of foreign films (those french, germany, russia, israel) alone as my friends are not that adventurous when it comes to watching movies.

Oh, watch shrek :) It's good :)

Hi LP,

Really? Watching movies alone means I am unwanted? haha.. I am actually rather tickled by that idea. Maybe, it's because I don't want company. ;)

I would probably grow old to be like Mr. Bean. ;-p

You make me feel like going to watch Shrek 3 right now. Maybe, I will give myself a break from blogging tonight and go watch it.

All of us have our lonely time and it does not mean that one is unwanted. I was very lonely in my teenage time as most of my friends were busy dating or partying. I was searching and not knowing what exactly I need. I look at my Dad now who is sitting at home not doing anything meaningful and I think he is lonely. So, somehow we are all lonely at some moment, it is whether now or later.

Just enjoy your time.

Hi Gal,

Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment. I watched Shrek 3 with my sister earlier in the evening. Didn't watch it alone after all. ;-)

Every single moment in life is special and should be treasured. Enjoy every moment. I will try to. :)

I think loneliness is an emotion. We should all embrace and experience different emotions, the different texture, the various highs and lows it brings, for without the different emotions, how would one be able to tell loneliness from happiness or pain from comfort.

And once we are able to fully embrace them, then we should learn to detach ourselves from these emotions.

I am still learning... :)

AK, there is absolutely nothing wrong with watching movie alone, although doing it in orchard road on a sat night with couples around could be a little uncomfortable. Essentially, i consider this as 'me' time, a time for myself to do what i want however i want in whatever shape and form that i desire, without consideration to anyone else. i find it rather liberating at times

Hi Uni,

You are absolutely right, of course. Very ZEN. I like it. ;)

Hi bummy,

I agree and I enjoy quality time with myself. Whatever shape and form?? After watching Shrek 3, that sounds like an allusion. Hahaha.. ;p

Ak,

You must have signed a magical contract wishing everything away :)

Don't get me wrong - I wasn't the one who said that watching movies alone is for losers. I very much prefer my own company :) It's a very impt thing for me, to recollect my idea and to reflect.

Hi LP,

If I had a magical contract, I would wish for world peace (ala Miss Congeniality). ;p

I know you didn't say losers watch movies alone. I know you said it means being unwanted. ;-p

AK71, i am also those loners in the cinema... being a movie buff/junkie and sitting few movies at once isnt something my kakis can tahan anyways, so also end up watching numero uno. Sometimes its just plain convenient when in the sudden mood, other times its a window to retrospect to pause and collect our thoughts.
The other day caught The Losers & Iron Man 2 as lone ranger....hahah.......

Hi Jason,

Wah, you go for movie marathons! I used to do that in my younger days too, especially if I was visiting K.L. on holiday! The movie tickets are so cheap there! I would go to the Megamall at Mid Valley and spend the whole day at the movies! ;-p

I have always been wondering, are you single?

AK71 said...

Hi Anonymous,

Yes, I am and I intend to stay that way until a rich lady falls in love with me and wills me all her worldly possessions. ;-p

Could you leave your name or initials in future comments? Thanks. :)

Hmmmmm, so you have never been together with anyone before? Just wondering why do guys prefer to stay single nowadays.

Hi Steven,

Signs of the times? The government is having a hard time getting people to marry and have babies. ;-)

We only have to look at a few developed countries and we will see aging populations. Singapore has the same problem which is why immigration is so important to us.

For me, I don't wanna get tied down and have all the commitments. Thanks for the concern. :)
