Tea with AK71: iPhone with private videos.

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

I was surprised to see a Nuffnang ad in my blog just now offering a $10,000 reward for the return of a lost iPhone with private videos. Owner: Mr. Eddy Sun.  This guy must be in his early 30s going by his email address: eddysun77@gmail.com.  He lost his phone at Borders last night.

He has put up a blog just for the purpose of recovering his iPhone and it comes with a video clip of him making a personal appeal:

His blog: http://helpfindmyphone.blogspot.com/

I am posting this to help the poor guy spread the word since his Nuffnang ad comes and goes. I don't make any money this way but what the heck. Just trying to help.

If this is real, I wish him luck.  If this is a prank, it is in very bad taste and it's not even Earl Grey!

Hi Anonymous,

Really? Contact him to arrange the return and collect your reward. :)

Could you leave your name or initials in your future comments? Thanks.

This is a viral marketing campaign for a smartphone manufacturer.

Hi Gene,

A viral marketing campaign? Really? It doesn't feel like an ad campaign. I mean there is a personal blog with an email account too. Then again, you might be right. If it is what you say it is, it might backfire! :-(

backfire? why???

Hi Lord Koh,

Fancy nick. ;)

Many think this case is genuine and are sympathetic towards the owner of the lost phone. So, if it turns out to be a hoax, people won't be too happy about it. It is like having people playing with your feelings. Not nice. :(

Hi AK,

As time goes, I think this looks more like a marketing gimmick than a real case. Sounds like some ad for some handphone.

Hi LP,

Tsk, tsk. The things that some would do. Listening carefully to the video recording, I think he says his phone is an ASUS! I keep thinking that it's an iPhone! :(

This is a Microsoft Viral Video. I just checked my Nuffnang account and that's the name of the campaign.

Hi, this is Chris Chin and I work for Microsoft. Great to see so many people expressing your points of view on Eddy’s lost phone. As many of you had guessed, Eddy is fictional. His character was created to raise awareness that when you lose your phone, you risk losing your data, personal or work-related. It is extremely important to back up the data on your phone and protect your privacy. If this message misled you, please accept my sincere apologies. We have discontinued this campaign.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for clearing the air. I guess you guys are trying to inject some realism into the campaign but I think it has crossed the line from education to fooling with people's feelings. Not nice.

If Microsoft gives me a copy of their new OS and MS Office for free, I might be more forgiving. ;-p
