Tea with AK71: 60c soya beancurd et al!

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Tiong Bahru Market is a favourite eating place for me. Today, I had lunch there with my family.

The beancurd at Long Ji (Store No. 250) is the best and cheap too. I have brought friends and customers there before as well. Even the customers from Hong Kong are amazed at how good and inexpensive it is. 60c a bowl!

I always make it a point to bring some back to consume later in the day and night. A big container of yummy beancurd for only $1.10! I bought four containers' worth.

The dough fritters are only 70c each. I bought 3 for $2.00. I think the dough fritters at Food Republic are not as nice and they cost 90c each.

The Lor Mee is also famous.  There are two Lor Mee stores. This is the corner store next to a washing area. I cannot remember the store number. $2.50 a bowl and it includes fried fish and fried wanton.

Original Tiong Bahru chwee kway (steamed rice cakes?)! I prefer this to Jian Bo chwee kway. The secret of good chwee kway is really in the chye poh (pickled turnip?). Cannot be too oily and too mushed up. This is just nice. Price? A princely sum of $1.

Yummy. Burp.

Many years back, only know of jian bo chwee kueh in the old market... Technically, I am unable to differentiate between these 2 nowadays... Their chilli is worth a mention...

Hi isaac,

It seems that you have to pay a long overdue visit to Tiong Bahru Market. ;)

Hi Anonymous,

I guess we have our own taste in everything. It's only normal. Cannot imagine everyone liking the same things. :)

Could you include your name or initials in future comments? Thanks.

wait till you see how they prepare the food then you say cheap??

i live there for 20 yrs in Kim Tian Road. And i been to that market almost every days, just because my business is just next door.

What so nice abt the food when they used bare hand to handle it..

You like the taste of their hand?

Just like stock, dont shout cheat first before you commit.

You just need to get one time food poisoning before you know it is cheap.

And 1.10 for takeaway is not cheap. I can have the same for 0.90and more hygience at Keat Hong.

If you still not believe, just likes stock, you go and observe how they go abt preparing their food first before you say.

and last so sorry, if you dont like this, just a word of caution like stock. One time like China Hong and Hongwei is enough. With these food at Tiong Bahru, that is equal to weeks in the SGH next door for food poisoning.

Good luck to you all for your stock..and your "cheap" food.

And to talk abt the famous chwee kueh make my blood boil. Why?

You know that this "towkay" of this chwee kuah causes his wife death by having an affair. So the wife commit suicide. Why patroninse a chwee kuah to make this guy richer so he can fool around with woman. If you are a long time customer, you know that the wife is a very friendly and faithful ones.

How do i know? I grow up in Kim Tian 20yrs.

What the heck we got to do with this F++Ker...

Hi Nick,

Yummy Lor Mee. Nice but I am never full from just one bowl. Always have to buy some other stuff like the char siew paus or a bowl of ice kachang.

Wow! Your investments are in the USA! Too far away for me. ;-p

Hi cheongwee_tan,

I ate at the old Tiong Bahru Market years and years ago as a boy. I didn't like it. It was always wet and dirty. In those days, I lived in Katong and my parents would drive us all the way to Tiong Bahru once in a while to have dinner. I hated it.

Then, I rediscoverd Tiong Bahru Market when it moved to its temporary premises at Kim Tian Road as its old location was undergoing rebuilding. It was cleaner, brighter and more spacious.

Of course, the new premises is so much better. Many stores have cards displaying the letter "A" for hygiene too.

Anyhow, thanks for sharing your insider information. It makes for interesting reading on a Sunday. :)

Oh yes, I lived in Choa Chu Kang for many years until my recent move to Tiong Bahru. I like Keat Hong too. In fact, it was a short walk from where I stayed. :)

Hi Hubert,

I am not sure if they have the more exotic type of food you like. ;)

They have a very good Western Food Store "Deli and Grill" though. :-)

now i am hungry again. unlike stocks, i rather not know too much of what happened in the kitchen. so as long as they are hygienic n no LS for me.

and like stock, it is what you think you see but is not exactly tbe truth, that is more worrysome. all the fa &ta &analyst so accurate, then There will millions of Peter Lim around, enjoying the riches from stockmarkets around the world

just enjoy a good Cheap meal there & hoped that the prices reasons reasonable for a long time to come.

Hi SnOOpy168,

I just ate the last container of Tao Fu Fa (as the Cantonese would call it). Yummy. Hahaha..

I am sure that food prices are going up. With all the natural calamities and food shortages in the world, it is a natural development. :(
