Tea with AK71: A healthy low cost meal.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

I have blogged about some low cost meals before and they have attracted many comments, some of which were surprisingly strong. I still remember some animated comments regarding the 70c nasi lemak and the cheap hawker fare at Tiong Bahru Market.

Well, I am now going to share with you another one of my favourite low cost meals which is easy to cook and full of nutrition: Oats. We can buy a 500g packet of raw rolled oats for about $3.00 from NTUC Fairprice. If you shop at Cold Storage, it could cost a bit more. It is cheaper to buy a 1kg pack, weight for weight, if you are cooking for more than one usually.

Put a pot of water to boil.

Get about half a bowl of raw rolled oats ready.

When the water has come to a boil, pour in the oats.

Replace the lid and switch off the fire. Leave it for 30 minutes or so. Sometimes, I forget and leave it for a bit longer but it's OK as the fire is off.

When you come back, give the contents a good stir.

You could add sugar or honey for taste. You could also add some dried fruits like raisins and apricots. There you have it: a low GI (glycemic index) meal that is full of nutrition and fibre.

Cost? Less than a dollar per serving, for sure. Guess what did I have for breakfast?

Definitely no prize for that.. :p
haha, I eat a lot but I don't really like rolled oats.. :D

My cheap food will always be some bean soup.. With a little bit of frozen rib + bean + some random veggie I can found on my fridge..

Hi hydrogenperoxide,

I've had oatmeal since I was a kid when I was being taken care of by my maternal grandmother. Only a year or so ago, I began to make oatmeal at home as I am trying to eat right for my blood type and oats are good for me.

I like beans too and my favourite is Navy Beans which is good for my blood type. Unfortunately, pork is bad for my blood type and I have to avoid it. :(

it is more expensive but brings more benefits i feel. I suggest you put less water.

Hi Drizzt,

I am glad you approve. ;)

I have tried less water and more water and prefer having more moisture. Yes, adding fruits in oatmeal definitely hits the spot. :)

I look forward to reading about your healthy recipes. After all, we are blogging and not writing investment newsletters, right? I have non-investment stuff in my blog regularly too. ;-p

However, wheat and buckwheat are bad for my blood type. So, my interest would just be pedestrian. :(

Hi AK,

I have been having quacker's instant oats with milk for 10+years every morning. Quick and filling and i saved $ on breakfast for years... Just add hot water can makan liao

My mother said adding milk will reduce my chances of osteoporosis haha. In fact my whole family also have this as breakfast everyday too. I agree this is a healthy n budget meal!! :)

Hi JL,

Good for you. :)

However, I was advised that rolled oats are actually more nutritious than instant oats and, thus, my choice. Basically, less processed, the better. It is just like how brown rice is supposed to be a healthier choice than polished rice.

Of course, saving money by eating at home is always a good idea. ;)

Hi AK,

Yea, maybe i should start hunting for a healthier kind of oats which can be cooked fast :p thanks for your suggestion!

I don't like oats..fortunately I haven't been forced to eat it yet

AK71 said...

Hi JL,

Hey, if you do find something, remember to drop me a note. Thanks. :)

AK71 said...

Hi Hubert,

I really can't imagine why you would be forced to eat something you don't like. ;)

" less processed, the better. "

Absolutely.

BTW: Whats with the good food for blood type ? Can you share more ?

Cheers

Hi SnOOpy168,

Here is a link for you and anyone who is curious about eating right for our blood type:

i would advise everyone to stay away from milk. the human's stomach is not meant to process milk unlike the cow.

remove wheat and gluten from your diet is also advisable. i have done it after being a meat monstor for 30 years. if i can do it so can you guys.

Health is wealth. So if you and Drizzt would share your healthy recipes, it's still part of "finance" - or am I stretching it?

AK, who knows? You may spin-off another blog on healthy eating?

AK71 said...

Hi Drizzt,

Yes, wheat and gluten is supposedly bad for my blood type too. Rice and oats are good for me.

Milk and cheese are supposedly good for my blood type.

Anyway, in case you are wondering, I am a B+.

Hi SMOL,

Another blog? Haha.. I might actually do it only if I start blogging full time. :)

AK,

It may be healthy, but you should have more fresh food like fruits and vegetables. I notice that most of what you blog about are dried stuff. Balance is the key.

Another healthy food which you can do yourself instead of just oats is muesli. Have a mixture of oats, rolled barley, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, dried apples, raisins, cranberries, quinoa and whatever other seeds and grains that you want and pulse it in a blender and chopper. You can add milk or Milo and pour hot water and mix. I find that it is a more complete breakfast or whenever you want. Organic of course.

Hi Li,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for being concerned about my health. :)

I assure you that I do take fruits and vegetables. I don't eat like this everyday. ;)
