Mid-life crisis? Investing for income continues.

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

I am going through some big changes in my life. I am monetising my investments in real estate and moving back to stay with my parents. With work giving me some rather bad headaches recently, I am thinking of what I should be doing next. What is the next step in my life?

Should I continue with the status quo? I could. I would have to suffer the rather constant bad headaches at work as they are caused mostly by problems which are beyond my control.

Should I just quit and do something else? Time for a change? Indeed, time for a long break? Unfortunately, often, things have a way of turning out differently from how we would like them to.

Anyway, whatever I plan to do or not to do, I continue to invest for income and if I should be unemployed one day whether by choice or not, I have no fear even if I should be unable to find alternative employment.

Today, I  bought more units of Sabana REIT at 92.5c per unit. Readers might remember that I said I would like to lighten my position in AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT and to increase the weight of Sabana REIT in my portfolio. The reasons were discussed in this blog post here.

Well, unit price of AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT has been testing 22c resistance on low volume and one wonders if it could be broken. Price is flirting with the declining 200dMA. The ADX shows the +DI having the advantage and that the trend is positive and strengthening. The MACD, on the other hand, is finding it hard to form a higher high.

If volume does not increase significantly to take out resistance presented at 22c, I would not be surprised if price should retreat to test 21c for support. This is where we find the rising 50dMA and the uptrend support. I would not panic as the uptrend would still be intact. The price action of the last two weeks has broken out of the downtrend which started on 17 Sep 2010.

As for Sabana REIT, technically, it is trapped between 93c and 92c. 93c is where we find the flat 50dMA and 92c is where we find the flat 20dMA. The ADX suggests that there is no trend. So, I look at the Stochastics for clues.

Drawing a trendline connecting the lows, we get a support line which suggests that the Stochastics could test 50% in future which suggests a weakness in price is possible. Immediate support is at 92c. 91.5c? Not very likely if we see where the trendline support is at. Currently, it coincides nicely with the 20dMA at 92c.

Although I have not managed to do a partial divestment of my investment in AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT, I decided to go ahead and buy more units in Sabana REIT at 92.5c a piece today. The fundamental reasons to increase my investment in Sabana REIT remain valid and a partial divestment of my investment in AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT is not a necessary condition for this to take place.

Due to the changes in my life and my current mental state, during the next few weeks, there could be a day or two or even a few days in a row when I might not be updating my blog. I will try to update it as frequently as possible, of course. Blogging remains an engaging hobby for me.

Hi AK,

It is important not to get too personal over work, anyway it is just working and converting time over money (in the case that you do not like the job).

Even though so, with the above perspective of not getting too personal, you can just look out for something you love to do as a job.

Spending time over some work which you like and socialising at work is what really matters.

Relax and cool down.

Always enjoy your blog.. Please keep it flowing..

Your Avid Readers,
JJ

Hi JJ,

Being at the job for more than 10 years, it is hard not to develop relationships, good and bad. So, it is hard not to get personal although I know where you are coming from. I will try to be more philosophical. ;)

Thank you very much for the advice and the encouragement. :)

Take good care of yourself man. All the best in your career.

Maybe have a little vacation?? Haha.

Anyways, you can always count on your fans for support!

Stay off the junk Maggie mee and you should be ok. Perhapsmu need a change in environment

Hey Ak, just thought I dropped some encouragement. The moves you're about to make will definitely mean quite a lot to you. As long as it's taken a step at a time and don't try and do too much at once. Things will eventually fall into place. We're all humans and have feelings! Take care!

AK71 said...

Hi Zoole,

I always have short vacations but I think it has come to a point where they have limited benefits. I am now thinking of a long break. ;)

I have fans? Goodness gracious and I am not even Korean! ;p

Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Hi Drizzt,

I must remember to eat healthy to stay healthy. This is one thing you have impressed upon me. Appreciate that. :)

A change of environment or a simple avoidance of an old environment? I am still musing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

Hi Darcy,

You are right, of course. Baby steps to better things. (Initially, I wrote "bigger things" but changed it. Why must we think of having more all the time? Sometimes, having less could be a good thing too.)

Thank you very much for the encouragement. :)

Hi AK,

I can empathize with you as I'm going through the same emotional roller coaster.

I was at the beach last night for a quiet reflection. Lots for things flow into my mind, my present situation, my past, the joys and sorrows, what I can have done then that could have potentially alter my life. Surprisingly, there were no thoughts of the future. What struck me then was how small and tiny I am in the face of the vast sea before me. I realize that maybe our problems and worries ain't really that big after all.

Hee, I could go on and on and in fact I have written several paragraphs but have decided not to put it in.

Would you be free for coffee this weekend? Two guys having a lazy Sat/Sun branch or high tea sounds nice isn't it? Just drop me a mail ya. :)

Cheers!
Derek

Hello AK,

I just want to share 3 thoughts with a fellow "tao" traveller:

1) The body is reminding the heart - remember what makes you happy as a child? "Xin tai" change; same environment no more headaches. "Xin tai" no change; moving into a new environment may not help.

2) Plan less; let go. Where the wind blows, the falling leaf follows.

3) When I return next year, I'll invite you to a maggi mee orgy fest? Drinking water "too pure" will hurt the body.

Hi Derek,

You are much younger than me and already so reflective. :)

I have not given much thought as to my past. The present and the future have always occupied my energies.

I will have to take a rain check on your offer of a lazy afternoon high tea (which I used to indulge in as a young man). My weekends are packed for the next few weeks, you see.

Will consider taking up your offer when I am more settled. :)

AK71 said...

Hi Hwang,

Yes, I always say to people, "All in good time."

I am taking my own advice now. Thanks. :)

AK71 said...

Hi SMOL,

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. My response:

1. Yes, I try to be more ZEN about things these days although it could still be a challenge at times.

2. I am a worrier by nature and this would be very tough.

3. Haha.. I am trying to cut down on this. So, I will pass.

:-)

Hi AK71

Work headaches because of people or the external circumstances (e.g. business conditions, economy etc).

Generally, if it's because of people, then could be time to change especially if the people you're working on a day-to-day basis are "toxic".

If the push is due to external conditions, that you probably need to see if it's a company specific thingie or a industry wide thingie to guide your decision to move/stay.

I wish you all the best no matter how things are and do count your blessings :-)

Be well and prosper.

AK71 said...

Hi Panzer,

Counting my blessings is what keeps me sane. Otherwise, I would be barking mad by now. ;)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it. :)

Hey AK

Perhaps it is good to take a breather, away from the comfort zone & routine of work-home.

Time to take a loooong drive into Malaysia. Slow pace of everything. Sit down over some tea / beer and think things over. I am sure that you can afford the time.

Hopefully, that you can still regularly & actively blog while you having this breather. ^-^

Hi AK,

I have not commented on your website for quite a while (be sure that I am still a loyal reader), but want to respond to your latest post.

I think I went through a very similar stage as you 2-3 years ago - you can call it midlife crisis. Basically, too much stress from all sides, and a strong desire for radical change.

I opted for a GRADUAL change. Instead of quitting my job altogether and went back to university (it had been my fantasy), I was fortunate enough to be able to work PART-TIME for a couple of years, during which I could clear my mind, start branching out to something else, have more time to myself and loved ones, WITHOUT burning the bridges behind. I feel that was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I know not everybody can afford to do that, but if you're not under too much financial pressure, this may be an option to help you through the transition. It might be worth negotiating for.

As for investing for income - totally my philosophy too!

Victor

Hi SnOOpy168,

It is a very tempting idea. A long break. :)

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will take it into consideration although I don't particularly enjoy driving these days. ;)

AK71 said...

Hi Victor,

Thanks for sharing a fresh idea. Work part time? That sounds like a possibility.

Yes, I think a gradual change is what I should go for. Sounds less jarring. It seems to have worked out nicely for you too. :)

Would definitely think about it more. Thanks again. :)

Hi AK71,
Remember this prayer:
"It's not what happens to you in life that matters, but rather how you react to what happens."

In anything, if you think you have given your best shot, it's O. K., it's time to let go. Look forward to start something new. Cheers!
Shalom.

Hi Temperament,

Thank you for sharing that quote. It certainly rings true. :)

I will take some time to sort out my thoughts and plans. I can only hope for the best as certain things are beyond my control.

RL said...

Hi AK,

Although I do not know you in person, I want to wish you well in this difficult period.

Would like to share that I was already prepared to quit my job to take a at-least-half-year break without job, since no employer would probably want to wait so long. And I believe that this break is important for me to recharge, before decide what I really want to do for the "next half" of my life (if we believe that this is "mid-life" crisis) :-)

I decide to inform my boss early so that he can plan for his man-power. To my surprise, he offers me No-Pay-Leave, which I thought is not a bad idea. Although I can't promise him anything after NPL, at least there is still a chance for both of us... that he may not loss a 15-years experience staff, and I may still decide that this job is not that bad after all. Ha!

Looking forward to my NPL in second half of this year :-)

Hope that you are also able to work out something that is best for your situation.

BTW, there is no way that you can "try to be more Zen about things". You just have to do it, and keep practising. Just like when you play basketball, you simply can't "try to play" basketball. You simply "play", no matter how lousy your skills are. You either "play" or "not play", there is no "try". So JUST DO IT! :-)

Take care...

RL

Hi RL,

You are very lucky to be able to take a six months no pay leave from your job. I believe I won't be the last one to say this either. :)

I cannot say I will be Zen about things tomorrow when I wake up, I will take time to be more Zen. To me, it is a scale. So, I will still try. I get your drift but this is me and I am sure I am different from you. :)

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience with me. Believe me when I say it means a lot to me. :)

Hi AK,

I was going though a crappy time at work two years back when everything that could go wary was going wrong. Particularly annoying when these involve individuals whom you know personally, sometimes I just want to cry murder ! I tried to console myself by thinking that’s the reason why I am employed, helps barely, until more shit arrives.

The choice of continuing your work is not exactly within your control, as least for now nor taking a long break during this period feasible. Perhaps the changes to your life also contributing to the pressure you are facing . But we all have this uncanny ability to manage the predicament that we are in, towards the end of the year I believe the pressure will ease off somewhat ?

Take care AK and catch you soon.

AK71 said...

Hi bummy,

There could be more than meets the eye and only time will tell. ;)

Catch up soon. Thanks. :)

hello AK,

what is stopping you from venturing out? is it FEAR?

FEAR is within us & if we look deeper . . . it is often ourselves that is stopping us from reaching our goals. FEAR is powerful as it can evoke a lot of emotions.

if it not FEAR, perhaps it is not about the job. perhaps it is something else. U need some diversion. As your career is important to u, something else that u are looking for in yr life manifested in your career frustration.

i admire u for your patience & perseverence. staying in a job for more than 10 years is not commonly seen nowadays for someone yr age.

i wish u well !

AK71 said...

Hi KM,

It has been quite a while since I last heard from you. Thanks for the comment. :)

I guess there is some fear but not fear for myself but fear for others. People still need me around and I have a sense of obligation. Anyway, it is something which I have to sort out myself.

I am sure I will come out on top of things in time. Some situations in life are a bit more complicated than others.

Just have to roll with the punches for now. This is life.

This blog post has received many comments from readers and I am truly touched. :)

Hi AK,

Sad to hear that things are not looking good for you in your job. Do not make any haste decision. Maybe things are not so bad.

Dont worry too much and take things one thing at a time. The best is yet to be!
