Tea with AK71: Breakfast and lunch for 96c.

Friday, September 21, 2012

What did I have for breakfast and lunch today?

Breafast: Oatmeal! My favourite!

A 1 kg pack of rolled oats costs less than S$5.00 and is enough for 20 servings or more. So, each serving costs 30c to prepare, perhaps. I would cook enough for 3 servings each time. Keep them in the fridge and bring 1 serving to work daily for the next 3 days.

Lunch: Cup noodles!

I used to eat instant noodles frequently but I have cut down on these a lot in the last few years. I bought some two nights ago when I went grocery shopping at NTUC Fairprice with my mother after taking a walk to the neighbourhood park together. Only $5.95 for 9 cups! That is 66c a cup! Cheap!

*Hot water courtesy of the office pantry.

Total cost of breakfast and lunch today: 96c.

I bet most readers will find this blog post rather amusing, like quite a few of my "Tea with AK71" blog posts.

"Aiyoh, AK71 is so stingey lor!"

Hahaha... Each of us have our own mindset which determines the way we respond to situations as well as the attitude we have towards all things.

Being thrifty is part of my mindset and it is unlikely to change. Being thrifty, however, believe it or not, has allowed me to be less thrifty in life these days. ;)

Thrifty is good..........BUT
not on the essentials.

These fast cup noodles are posison.
All sort of persevatives and seriously lacking the vitamins and minerals one needs.

On top of that, its almost all bad carbs.

Be thrifty on the non essentials.

But oatmeal is great! :)

Hi JCK,

Haha.. Yes, I know instant noodles are bad. SMOL might disagree. ;)

I rarely eat instant noodles these days. Once in a while is OK. I cannot cut junk food out of my diet totally. ;p

These days, I keep a tub of preserved prunes, a tub of raisins and a packet of roasted almonds at home as snacks. I try to eat less chocolates and chips too.

I have also been eating more fruits and vegetables.

Being kiasu, I also take supplements. See: My diet and dietary supplements.

Getting older, must take care. :)

Cory said...

I do agreed that we should avoid stingy on Essentials.

Frankly speaking, after doing all those above, and then taking supplements is quite a contrast.

Furthermore not sure this kind stuffs are helpful or not. It maybe give you the perception that it is filling the right gaps.

Is better to go all natural.

AK71 said...

Hi Cory,

Haha.. People might think that I eat like this all the time. I don't. ;p

I prepare my own meals usually and bring to work. I like making sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and ham too.

As for supplements, I can say for sure that they do make a difference and people who take them on my recommendation usually feel a difference too. Just a good multivitamin at the start of the day makes a difference. :)

I sneezed. So it's you ;)

Water too pure is bad for us (I kid you not!).

Likewise for diets. Too healthy and "clean", body never build up resistance...

Everything in moderation is OK one lah!

I like the way you walk the middle path.

Life a bit boring without sugar, salt, chocolate (better than sex sometimes!), instant noodles, pork lard, laksa, char kuay tiao, and my favourite - coca-cola!!! (And I wonder why I got big tummy...)

Can eat is our good fortune ;)

AK,

Try to have a healthy diet. With the dividends you collected, i m sure you can have a healthy meal everyday. Keep away from instant noodles, they r deadly... I agree with JCK, Oatmeal is great!

AK71 said...

Hi SMOL,

You said before that if I blog about food, you would comment mah. Haha.. My recent blog post on fried bee hoon did not see you commenting wor. ;p

Chocolate or sex? I would go with chocolate anytime but must be good chocolate hor. kekekeke...

As for lard, once upon a time, I was trying to be very healthy and told the wanton noodle seller "no lard". He looked at me like I was from another planet. Anyway, no lard it was and inedible it was too... :(

AK71 said...

Hi Steven,

Oh, I simply cannot live without oatmeal although I can live without instant noodles. ;p

Just out of curiosity, what would you consider a healthy meal if I were to eat out? :)

AK71 said...

Hi Howyuan,

Died from eating too much instant noodles? Really? You are not making this up to scare SMOL, are you???

AK71 said...

Hi FoodieFC,

Must save money to invest more mah! hahaha.. Kidding! ;)

Aiyoh, once in a while lah. I don't eat like this all the time. :)

Skip the instant noodles in cups lah. Those packaging, MSG + whatever unknown ingredients, smells and tasted long term risk to me. Esp when most of the stuff are MIC (Made in China)

I recalled a friend cooked extra macaroni or such items pasta items, freeze it and put a few of these in tupperware inside the office pantry fridge. Whenever a lunch in is needed, just add some water & microwaved it. Heard that she has to put "DO NOT TOUCH" notes on her stuff as the food regularly disappears.

Seriously, I know that some will call you stingy. But then, not everyone will appreciate this lifestyle. A few gourmet dinners a month is my favorite, thou usually I cannot remember the names and stories behind the dishes.

Life is no LV bag, but to be enjoyed regularly and in moderation.

Huat ah & good weekend everyone.

SMOL, beware :P

Hi SnOOpy168,

I do enjoy going to Soup Restaurant periodically for healthy and reasonably priced dinners. However, I also enjoy instant noodles from time to time. ;p

No gourmet dinner for me. A plate of $32 pasta at an Italian restaurant? I definitely do not know how to appreciate such a lifestyle. Hahaha.. ;)

AK71 said...

Hi Howyuan,

Thanks for supplying SMOL with some horror stories for bedtime reading. ;p

Bro AK71,

You really have my respect bro! I have been following your blog since 2 years ago and I have to thank you for shifting my investment focus to REITs and passive income counters. I have benefited tremendously from them. It really amazes me that you are so thrifty despite your huge passive income. I wish I can learn more from you man as I seem to spend more as I earn more.

Cheers,
Kelvin

AK,

Your previous fried bee hoon post turned me off...

No luncheon meat, no fried egg, no fried chicken wing?

And unforgivable - no chili sauce?

Teacher says if got nothing good to say - zip it! LOL!

I think I just got an inspiration for a satire post ;)

AK71 said...

Hi Kelvin,

REITs have made my portfolio more resilient while delivering a constant income stream and I am happy that you have found investing in them beneficial. :)

Thrift is very much a part of my mindset. It is hard for me not to be thrifty although I am more willing to spend these days. Good or bad? ;p

AK71 said...

Hi SMOL,

Wah! My favourite fried bee hoon turns you off? Hahaha.. My apologies. ;p

I try to choose healthier options even as I eat unhealthy food. Does this make any sense?

Satires? I guess you must have enjoyed "Alice in Wonderland". No?

AK so rich hor, good for you and family!

Hi JJ,

I don't feel rich. So, I don't think I am rich. :)

Thank you for your well wishes. :)

Hi AK,

Eat out, healthy?

Consider all the msg, salt and oil levels in the food served outside these days, i would say all to be unhealthy.

Thinking of all the people involved in preparing the food you eat... i dont think the food will ever be healthy... if it dosent kill you instantly, it kills you slowly..

The only healthy foods are prepared at home, by your love ones. ^^
Try to avoid outside food as much as possible. If need be, try to eat food with more vegetables.

Rgs,
Steven

Hi Steven,

My sis and mom would cook sometimes but it is probably once a week or twice a week. We mostly eat out. Everyone is working.

Actually, when I was staying alone, I used to cook more and I believe my meals were quite healthy because my favourite cooking method is boiling! Hahaha.. ;p
