Good and cheap(er) pineapple tarts.

Saturday, January 19, 2013

Chinese New Year is round the corner and I see pineapple tarts for sale everywhere! I have a severe weakness for pineapple tarts, you know.

I felt so tempted by the yummy looking tarts but they were all so expensive. $18 to $20 for a small container is quite normal. Nope! I refuse to give in to temptation. Actually, being turned off by the price tags made it easier to deny myself any gastronomical satisfaction.

Lucky for me, a friend recommended this brand which is being sold at NTUC Fairprice supermarkets.

450gm of yum yum!

Now, it is not the cheapest on offer at $7.80 for 450 gm but it looks quite good. I brought it home, left it in the kitchen and the next day my sister told me that my niece ate 6 pieces at one go. Verdict, it must be good!

Actually, it reminds me a bit of the ones sold at Bengawan Solo but with a smaller price tag.

Er, I am not related to the "Chewly" brand in any way and this is not a paid advertorial. Just sharing what I think is good value for money. Enjoy!
-------
P.S. I just looked at my Deals.com banner in the right sidebar. They have some special offers from more atas establishments for pineapple tarts. You might want to check these out. (9.50AM)

This sounds like good value for money:
CNY Cookies (Choice of any 3 Boxes)
– Only $20 instead of $54
pineapple tarts ($7.80 for 1 box instead of $18)
For your convenience, here's the link: Pineapple Tarts.

Hi AK,

Haha same here - pineapple tarts are about the only CNY goodies I will eat (and lots of them too). I think I have tried the Chewly brand some time back.

Enjoy eating!

Best wishes,
Eugene

Hi Eugene,

The nicer pineapple tarts are the ones with more butter. Taste is very personal, of course. ;p

I must make sure to eat a few only each time. Maybe 2 or 3. I am growing older and put on weight more easily. :(

my auntie knows how to make CNY cookies, including pineapple tarts.

Hi yeh,

I know what you mean. Actually, my sister makes pretty good pineapple tarts as well. Unfortunately, she has not started baking them yet this year and I had to satisfy my craving! What with all the pineapple tarts on display, I was going crazy! ;p

Hi JJ,

Wah! You polished off 2 boxes already? Yikes!

Er... how to lose weight?

A friend told me before: eat less, exercise more. Don't trust short cuts because they could shorten your life! ;p

Hi AK,

I didn't know Chewly makes pretty good pineapple tarts too. I'm an ardent supporter of their mini peanut puff (gok zai) but I don't eat much for the same reason as you. Weight piled on is hard to shed. CNY is the only time of the year that I'm at risk of tipping the scale. Thank goodness I'm still able to impose pretty good self discipline. Haha.

Personally, I have a real weakness for vegetarian almond cookies and hazel nut cookies that are made for CNY. The best I've tried is from Le Cafe at Middle Road, near Peace Centre. $13 each small container. Kinda pricey but well worth it. :D

Cheers,
Endrene

Hi Endrene,

Nooooo! No more temptations! I have gone temporarily deaf, er, I mean blind.

Hahaha... ;p

I am not familiar with the brand but I am always a sucker for anything that is value for money. ;)

I can never resist nice chocolates on special offer, for example. Sigh. They are the main source of my weight problem. :(

HI AK,

I have been buying the Chewly gok zai for the past ten years! Yes, very good value for money, indeed. :)

Sometimes, what appears to be good value isn't always the case. Just like the car I've bought last week. Haven't collected and having some many issues with the car salesman! Anyway, I'm glad there is lemon law now.

Oh, I digressed. Yes, with regard to weight management. Can consider drinking some herbal tea which helps to detox. The brand I buy is 'Bioslim'. Available at neighbourhood TCM shops for less than $6 a box and it contains 20 sachets, I think. Very good value and effective. Taste ok. I usually drink it once a week even though they recommend everyday.

And of course, we are advised to cut down on carbo and fats to avoid weight gain. Easier said than done lor! Hahaha.

I have a weakness for chocolate too. Especially, those that contain lots of almond or hazel nuts! Luckily, I don't crave for them often. Or else, it'll be really hard to maintain a BMI of around 20-21! Beyond this, I'll probably have to change my entire closet! LOL~

Hmmm...so for me, weight management is positively correlated with financial management!

Hi Endrene,

Oh, no. You are having issues with the car when you have not even collected it? Yikes! I hope things get sorted out soon. :(

I think my mom was drinking some slimming and detox tea as well. Personally, if I want to detox, I just make sure I eat mostly fruits and vegetables for a day or two. Strictly no meat. I do drink green tea because of the antioxidants and chinese tea because it reduces the body's ability to absorb fats. I will keep "Bioslim" in mind. ;)

BMI? Er... I don't even want to know what mine is. ;p

Yesterday I went to NTUC. They are selling one box @13++.
Not sure nice or not.

Hi yeh,

Er... If you can resist the temptation, best to wait for your aunty to deliver some home made (and free) pineapple tarts. ;p

JJ said...

AK... I bought two hours ago, taste not too bad, good price too.

Half gone! I tell myself this is my last box till CNY.

Usually I order the homemade tarts, request for more butter abt 50 -60cents each.

Those balance pineapple tarts are calling for me, going to make a cup of coffee now.... AK want to join me!

Hi JJ,

Recommended by AK surely must be good value for money! Confirmed, chopped and signed! ;)

Today, I had Char Kway Teow, Tempura, Tuna Buns, Fillet O Fish, french fries and OCK Curry Puff.

Thanks for the offer but I cannot eat anymore sinful stuff. OK, I just had an apple and some yogurt to make me feel less guilty. ;)

hi AK,

thanks for sharing great stuffs with us again. =)

which NTUC outlet did you get the Chewly tarts from? i couldn't find any at the Lot 1 NTUC...

Kyran Tan said...

The best tarts I tried are always home-made ones. And at Lower price too!

AK71 said...

Hi seth,

My goodness! Sold out? This is a disaster! Try the Fairprice outlets in Bukit Panjang Plaza or Tech Whye. :)

I got mine in Tiong Bahru.

Hi Kyran,

My sister is going to start baking this weekend. Oh dear... My pants are already feeling tighter today. I have been a bit greedy in the last couple of weeks... :(
