City Harvest Church: A personal account.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

One story I have been following is City Harvest Church's.

I am just so amazed by how so much money was accumulated and how so much money was misused. $50 million!

Just now, I was directed to a personal account shared by someone who used to be a Ministry Member of the church.

The church used peer pressure very successfully to get people to give to the building fund... from getting people to pledge and using testimonies... I remembered people giving their hearts out for the Jurong West building. Never once, were members informed that monies from the Building Fund were used to fund Sun Ho's career, and certainly not about monies being invested in Xtron or Firna.

CHC and its pastors have lost it. They have twisted and traded the gospel for another, and the astounding thing is that, they still believe they are doing the right thing.

Stupidity has no limits. When emotions rule over rationale, there is no intelligence involved. :)

Hi INVS 2.0,

I am sure that many members of the congregation are actually very intelligent people but once they blindly follow the church leaders, they are surrendering more than just their money, they are surrendering their rationality. They become part of a herd.

Hi AK 71,
Who says Human Beings are rational? In fact we are actually irrational as neuro-scientists can prove over again and again especially our behaviour in the stock market. If not where got market?

AK71 said...

Hi temperament,

I am not saying that human beings are rational. I am saying that human beings have the capacity to be rational. Don't surrender this.

Human beings are emotive and the collective emotions give shape to Mr. Market who is the manifestation of herd mentality. ;)

and also to the formation of charts for TAs to have fun looking about :)

My simple 2 cents, for people who openly donated towards what they thought was a good cause, we can't simply attempt to judge them just because we think we see a larger picture than them. If they find it blissful to give, who are we to take that blissfulness from them?

But I am not perfect and I judge :p I tend to side with what yeh and AK said.

To each his own, be happy and be merry :)

Hi Solidcore,

Indeed, there is wisdom in what you have said.

I know this person who is always taking advantage of his wife and lying to her. The strange thing is that the wife knows his character and what he is doing behind her back but because he is able to keep her happy, she closes one eye. ;)

Hi AK,

Too many people subscribe to the indoctrination - Bless and be blessed. Give generously and be rewarded.

We are often held emotionally hostage without us knowing it. The utilitarian world view shapes our behaviour which makes us susceptible to succumbing to fear, pressure, and rosy promises.

To be rational, one has to identify and address the emotions that overwhelm us the most. Take care of the emotions and we will not be led by blind faith. Just as true for a trader, isn't it? :)

Cheers,
Endrene

Hi Endrene,

All of us have our own baggage, our own demons. We are conditioned by our environment and our experiences. We are social products.

There are norms which we have come to expect and norms which we unquestioningly accept within our community.

It takes quite a bit of effort to leave our comfort zones and start questioning the things which make us comfortable. Usually, we start questioning when our comfort zones stop being comfortable.

Most of us are more reactive than pro-active. This also poses a big challenge for investors as we have to learn to be forward looking and not react to past numbers.

Knowing all these does not make me a better person or investor. Knowing a problem and not having a good solution provides no comfort. ;)

Hi AK,

Knowing beats not knowing. Ignorance is seldom bliss, or is it? ;)

Totally agree that we are products and by-products of our environment and culture. Good to develop a critical consciousness and learn not to accept things without questioning. But of course, if we become zen enough, we'll know when to let things be.

We manage at the level we can manage. 别自寻烦恼。量力而为。随遇而安吧。:)

Cheers,
Endrene

Hi Endrene,

We must know what are worth fighting for and what are not. We must know when to fight and when not to. When must know who we should fight and who we should not. This is wisdom.

Although I am all for a state of ZEN, it is really difficult in practice. I realise it comes easier with age but it is probably because of the hormonal changes in me as I grow older rather than a leap in my level of wisdom. ;p

AK,

Some pp are into religions not to seek God but to see fulfilment in other areas, like friendship, relationship, prospective spouse.....I believe that some pp choose not to look too much into this investigation. Cos they realise that they will lose their whole social network and support.

I know this since a young age...cos a lot of my classmates (non-catholic) in a catholic girls sch started to go to church so that they can meet boys...hahaha...

Hi Garfield,

So des ne! This is very enlightening! Some might consider it irreverent somewhat but this has given me a new perspective on church going! ;)

Actually, I do remember now that a friend told me that I should go to Wesley Methodist Church when I was in JC because I could meet many rich people. :)

AK,

yah you may be able to find your chun tian...bear a few kids to spend your enormous wealth :)

AK71 said...

Hi Garfield,

To be fair to people with children, their wealth building effort is probably a lot more strenuous than mine, everything being equal. I am a lazy person in many ways and I cannot imagine working till 55 or 60.

I salute all parents!

I heard this piece of news is not entirely true! Unless the court case has concluded and people has convicted, we can always assume and predict with our own twisted imagination. If not, it should not be like a case study as if we really know what is mentioned in court.

AK71 said...

Hi Nami,

Thank you for the comment. We shall wait for the official verdict. :)

City Harvest Church: Another one.

My query to the Board is whether they have been made aware of a four and a half hour meeting between Pastor Kong, Sun, myself and my wife? Are they also aware of some of the issues which I raised and whether there were sincere corrective actions taken since that meeting 3 months ago?

My query is how many of the board members made a conscious effort to read the COC Inquiry Report which was made accessible to them? And if they did, was then a diligent internal inquiry held in-house, to determine if there was any wrongdoing on the part of the alleged wrongdoers? Has the board done an inquiry on the issues named by COC, and satisfied itself fully that there has been no compromise of integrity? If the board has not done so, it cannot state that it knows and believes in the integrity of the senior leadership.

The board is probably unaware of many other issues, especially those on the pastoral angle, in terms of the manner of conduct of some of their pastors and senior leaders. Without such information, it is not equipped to issue a board statement of confidence.

The church statement is a mere attempt to unite the church with a spiritual tone, but lacks substance in dealing with the real issues of truth and integrity.
