Having an extra $1,200 a year!

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

I like plain white porridge with a bit of ikan bilis for dinner regularly. Last night, for some reason, I was not feeling hungry and, so, the porridge was stored in the fridge.

Today, I brought the porridge and ikan bilis to work. Sprinkle the ikan bilis on the porridge and voila:

For tea later, I will be having my regular oatmeal which is what I usually have for lunch. I have taken to adding soya bean milk to my oatmeal these days to get some extra protein and good taste.

Healthy and money saving meals.

If you have not tried bringing home cooked food to work, maybe you want to consider it. Depending on where you work, you could save up to $10 a day on meals! Just bringing your own food to work half the time could mean saving $100 a month on meals or $1,200 a year.

An extra $1,200 a year in your bank account? Very nice!

Hi yeh,

For sure, we all have our own poison. ;)

I have a friend who is going to buy a used car because he says he cannot take the crowded and unreliable public transport anymore! For that, he is willing to sacrifice dining out from now.

Hi pero,

Well, I think I should eat less. Often, I eat when I don't even feel hungry.

Anyway, I don't do any heavy work. So, I shouldn't need too many calories.

The stomach should get used to having less food over time. :)

Hi Garfield,

Why would it create a lot of gas in the stomach? My mom says this too but I don't understand why. It doesn't sound scientific. ;)

Wow! The porridge recipe you used when you were in university sounds yummy! I am sure it was delicious!

Tell you a secret, I don't like fish unless it is deep fried! ;p

Ke Lian Zhou? More ke lian than mine? Hahahaha... Aiyoh, it doesn't bother me as long as I enjoy it. I actually like my home cooked food. So, no issues. :)

Hi Garfield,

I was drawing reference to Garfield being a cat. Obviously, we were focusing on different aspects of being Garfield. Hahahaha.. ;p

Thanks for sharing this recipe! Sounds yummy.

Big drawback: too much work for me. Hahaha... ;p

Hi AK,

Young man take old man diet? LOL~

I love porridge too. But like Garfield, I heard that eating overnight porridge and rice is no good. Bacteria breeds in the food.

I also suspect that I must be a cat in my past life! Puss in boots, maybe?!? :P Besides nuts and eggs, fish is my main source of protein. Steam, grilled, or raw fish with porridge is my definition of delicacy! :D

Anyway, bringing home cooked food would also mean missing out on having lunch with colleagues. Sometimes, building the bond is important. So it might not always be a good idea to eat in. But of course, no contention on money saving! Can buy heaps of ice-cream with $1200! Coconut flavour is yummy~ :P

Cheers,
Endrene

Hi Endrene,

Well, I don't consider myself a young man. I am more middle aged, am I not? ;p

With regards to overnight food, I think if it is stored properly in the fridge, it should be OK to heat it up the next day to eat. I have been doing it forever. :)

I work in a SME, more S than M. All of us eat in the office. Amazing, isn't it? ;p

Hi AK,

I can't survive on what you are eating. I love eating hee. =)

Food makes me happy and help to relieve stress too./

AK71 said...

Hi FoodieFC,

Oh, I am sure anyone can survive on what I am eating. It is whether we can accept it. ;)

I like eating too, especially chocolates and ice cream but even these, I have cut down drastically.

Unfortunately, I discovered that once past the age of 40, we tend to put on weight a lot more easily. So, if we don't watch what we eat, we must be prepared to exercise a lot more to burn those calories.

Since I am a lazy guy, I figured that eating less requires less work. ;p
