Singaporeans are kicking up a fuss about a little haze!

Thursday, June 20, 2013

Is this Indonesia's brand of diplomacy?

A senior Indonesian minister has hit out at Singapore on the haze, saying: "Singapore shouldn't be like children, in such a tizzy."

Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono, who is coordinating his country's relief and response efforts, told a press conference on Thursday.

Earlier, he told reporters that Singapore said nothing when there was fresh air, but complained about the occasional haze.

"Singapore is like that. The border issue hasn't been settled, neither has extradition, corruption."
Asked about offers of assistance, he said: "If it's just half a million (dollars), better we use our own budget."

Imagine 2 people sharing a room having a conversation:

Si: "Aiyoh, you have been farting non-stop for days. It is affecting my quality of life!"

In: "You are behaving like a child! You say nothing when I didn't fart but complain about the occasional fart!"

Si: "Why don't I give you some money to see a good Gastroenterologist?"

In: "You think I have no money? If it is just $500, better I use my own budget." (But if you are offering $5,000, I will accept.)

It's a Indon politician's way of asking for money.

Even the good people of Indonesia recognizes that.

Hi Patty,

Indeed! It is almost blatant! Shameless!

Hi hunter,

Years and years ago, I used to write plays for fun. I even won a prize. ;)

Glad you enjoyed this 20 seconds skit! ;p

I remember some years ago, we also cause environmental problems by digging sands to build our real estate?

AK71 said...

Hi Tien,

They refused to sell sand to us, iirc.

Now, they are sending particles through the air to us free of charged instead. So, they are right. We shouldn't complain.

Free, cannot complain lah. ;p

Actually mosquitoes are scared of smoke. They might even have helped to save lives!

Hi Tien,

Now that you have mentioned this, $500k is too little. We must give them more money to show our appreciation. Singaporeans should be ashamed of ourselves. :(

"We cannot tell how the haze problem will develop. It can easily last for several weeks and quite possibly longer until the dry season ends in Sumatra," Lee told a press conference.

Singapore has provided satellite hotspot data and imagery to Indonesia to help identify those responsible, he said.

"Some Indonesian officials have suggested that these errant companies may be linked to Singapore and Malaysia," Lee said. "If any Singapore companies are involved, or companies which are present in Singapore are involved, we will take it up with them."

At 1 p.m. local time, Singapore's pollution standards index (PSI) soared to a new high of 371, indicating air quality was "hazardous."

In response to concerns and speculation over claims that the National Environment Agency's 3-hourly average PSI is inaccurate, Lee said that "we don't play those kinds of games in Singapore", while Dr Balakrishnan assured the press that there was "complete transparency" in the PSI data and cautioned that it needed to be "analysed appropriately".

When asked for the government's reaction to comments from an Indonesian ministers comments that Singapore is "acting like a child" over the haze issue, Lee said that it was "not fruitful" to respond.

I do not know why Singapore does not do the cloud seedling thingy to wash the island ckean.

AK71 said...

Hi Tien,

To do cloud seeding, there must be enough cloud cover to begin with. We don't have that.

Anyway, it makes more sense to do cloud seeding where the fires are going on as that would help to put out the fires. Of course, the Indonesians are saying that there isn't enough cloud cover as well.
