Inflation hits dental fees.

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

I spent $87.50 this evening at the dental clinic. Scaling and polishing. Ouch! Yes, painful. Don't misunderstand. I meant the bill.

I remember my last visit cost me about $60.00 only. Well, maybe a bit more. OK, to be fair, that was about two years ago. OK, to be more accurate, maybe it was a bit more than two years.

Still, takai des ne.

They would advise me to visit once every six months. When I was younger, I did that but I cannot remember when I stopped and, now, I would visit once every two or three years. I am terrible. I know.

However, I really take care of my teeth very well. I brush properly twice a day. You would be surprised how many people don't know how to brush their teeth properly. I only use Colgate Total toothpaste. I floss. I use Listerine mouth gargle.

Although it is more than two years since my last visit, the dentist gave my teeth a clean bill of health. No decay and not too dirty either. Just had some stains in places I could not reach normally.

Not smoking and not drinking coffee probably helped as well. Another reason to give up smoking and Starbucks coffee for those of you who are addicted. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

After thinking a bit more, I guess it is OK to pay S$87.50 since I saved $240.00 by not seeing the dentist every six months in the last two years, assuming that the price was still $60.00 per visit.

Reminder to myself:
Try to see the dentist at least once a year.

I face palm (see? I can talk new generation!)

LOL!

Another Jared in the house!

Hi Jared,

That is very expensive! The last time I spent so much was when I had to make a splint at the same time. That was years ago. Still using the same splint today.

Filling sounds like you didn't take good care of your teeth. Time to pay more attention to brushing and flossing correctly. ;)

Hi SMOL,

What is "I face palm"?

I catch no ball. :(

Face palm = slapping someone's face with your palm.

"I face palm" is a wrong phrase. The correct one is "face-palming myself". :)

Hi AK,

pluck out all your teeth for dentures for extreme savings... no more dental visits thereafter haha... a bit too extreme, i know.

AK,

Open your right hand, palm facing your face and move your hand quickly to your face. Get the drift? kekeke.

The Dentist is something close to my heart. Haha, don't get the wrong idea. Due to various incidents, I now have two implants and dunno how many root canal and fillings. Hence, a regular 6 month check up is a must for me.

The last check-up, cleaning and polishing cost about the same price as yours. But the dentist used a different kind of polishing - she ‘sand’ blasted my teeth.

Some of your tips help but genes also play a very important role. I know of people with poor dental hygienic and yet perfectly sound teeth (minus the staining). So if your parents hardly have any tooth decay, you are quite safe.

Choosing a dentist is like choosing a hair dresser. Price aside, you have to feel comfortable with him/her especially for private practice. Build up rapport and you know he/she won't charge you an exorbitant amount.

Another tip is to use dentist that offers discount for member e.g. NTUC. The rates are fixed, so no way can they over charge you. In addition NTUC members have a discount as well as points. I'm fortunate to find a nice lady from NTUC Denticare and have been sticking with her ever since.

May the tooth fairy be with you.

Hi INVS 2.0,

You are a member of the new generation. So, I guess you must be right on this. Thanks! :D

So, is SMOL saying he has not visited the dentist in many years?

Hi Paul,

The next step is to look at Q&M's numbers. ;)

I remember looking at them a couple of years ago but I found the valuation rather expensive. The PER was very high which meant that Mr. Market looked at it as a high growth stock. I didn't know if it was justifiable and, so, I avoided it.

Would you like to do a guest blog on this for us? ;)

Hi Matthew,

OK, I am about to reveal a secret. I had dentures before... for one tooth!

The dentist told me I had to. Otherwise, my teeth would move to fill the gap left by the missing tooth over time and it would be hideous.

Cost me $250 and I only wore it a few times. So very uncomfortable and I couldn't eat or speak properly. Forget it.

I see how my mom has to make new dentures every two years and it is not cheap. :(

Hi Derek,

You very wicked. Made me slap myself. :(

Incidents = accidents? Ouch and in more ways than one.

I guess your teeth are the most engineered parts of your body. ;p

Thanks for the tips. Very good ones too.

Hi AK,

Aiyoh, going to the dentist also need to be so penny pinching meh. Teeth must take care lah, else bo gey cannot enjoy food. Some more you have sweet tooth, will lose your teeth faster! :P

I go to dentist twice a year. Wonder if you visit Dr Sharon Yip too. I find her pretty good and I also prefer female dentist/doctors! :)

Hi Endrene,

I don't particularly enjoy visiting dentists. So, I try to take good care of my teeth and my track record has been quite good. Of course, a side benefit is that I save some money too. :D

I always get a different dentist because I don't visit often enough to see the same one twice. ;p
