A case of "Sorry No Cure" for Mr. Anton Casey?

Thursday, January 23, 2014

I understand the need to have more foreigners in Singapore due to our declining birth rate. Learn from Japan's experience. Don't make the same mistake.

I accept that it is a necessity but I also expect that foreigners respect their host country and not cause trouble for us just like how we respect them and welcome them.

People will make mistakes and, generally, if they are sorry, we should give them another chance. However, if the "mistake" is not a mistake. Then, if we give them another chance, it will be a chance to make the same "mistake".

What is the difference between murder and manslaughter?

If we know the difference, then, we know what we should do in the case of Mr. Anton Casey.

The Straits Times:

British expatriate apologises for calling commuters 'poor people'.

Foreign media reports:

1. British expatriate mocks 'poor people' and called taxi driver 'retard'.

2. British businessman forced to issue an apology.

3. Death threats for British banker after calling 'commuters' poor.

Please note that a reader who called himself “One of the poor people who take public transport” wrote the following, arguing why Mr Casey needs to be deported:

On the subject of Mr Anton Casey, I have the following to say:

Mr Anton Casey has committed an action with seditious tendency, whereby it is defined under Singapore’s Sedition Act (Chapter 290) Section 3 (1) as: A seditious tendency is a tendency — (d) to raise discontent or disaffection amongst the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore; (e) to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore.

Pursuant to Singapore’s Immigration Act (Chapter 133), Section 11 (3)(b) The Controller may, in his discretion — at any time after the issue of a re-entry permit under subsection (2), vary or revoke any condition to which the re-entry permit is subject or impose any condition thereto.

With reference to the deportation of the presumed (since they were never charged nor sentenced) foreign rioters in the recent Little India riot, Mr Anton Casey should also face deportation. As such, Mr Anton Casey should be deported to his country of origin following the revocation of his re-entry permit and Permanent Residency status.

I believe that the damage caused by seditious acts is much more harmful than the act of rioters. Hence, I do not see any reason why the Controller of Immigration should not revoke his re-entry permit and deport him to his country of origin, with or without trial.

Also, it is apparent that Mr Anton Casey is not sincere in his apology from his carefully worded email ending “specifically for my family”. In my opinion, he has simply indicated that he is unrepentant, and would not be apologising if not for the duress that his family. The fact that he has more than one act along the same line of thinking (prior video + current facebook post) indicates that his actions are not due to a moment of poor judgement, but an ingrained thinking that is unlikely be changed.

Singaporeans from all walks of life are touched to the core.

This after turnip-head, pasty-faced British expat Anton Casey sincerely apologised to Singaporeans of all stripes for calling them poor and smelly.

The heartfelt apology was made through a public relations company Fulford Public Relations that Casey had hired because money can buy remorse.

One Singaporean, Dui Bu Qi, said: “I can totally sense the sincerity and repentance in the apology. There is nothing that screams ‘I am truly, deeply sorry!’ than an apology written by a PR firm.”

Other Singaporeans, who heard the apology, teared as they could feel that it was from somewhere deep inside Casey’s soul.

Another local, Zhen Bao Qian, said: “The apology must have come straight from the heart and soul of Anton Casey. I can tell because it sounds like it was written by the intern working in the PR company, who probably spent 10 minutes on it, before heading out for drinks at the end of work.”

No biggie. The world's full of assholes and this one just happens to get caught for speaking his mind.

The more important message for people who live their lives online is that you have no privacy at all. Mr Casey did share to his initial posts to only "friends".

How many people can you truly call friends on Facebook? How many can gauge what you say to be a personal opinion and not an attack in general? How many actually know when you are jesting or not?

To be honest, I am not surprise there are people like Mr Casey. I am just amused how people can think everyone they had met online and shook hands with is a friend.

Hi Patty,

And people wonder why AK71's FB profile doesn't have a photo of himself but has only a picture of a coin.

Amusing, no? ;p

AK and Patty,

I'm sure we know of fellow Singaporean "friends" who have made similar jokes/complaints about "smell" on our MRT and buses.

I mentally categorise these "friends" as "acquaintances" from then on.

Water around me is muddy enough; don't need more mud on my petals.

Hi SMOL,

I try to be objective always.

"The train has a bad smell." could be a statement of fact.

"I have to wash the stench of public transport off me." smells of snobbery (pardon the pun).

I have said before that the MRT smells bad on some occasions when I took them. However, the thought that people who take the MRT are 'poor people' has never crossed my mind.

George Soros poor? I must be mad. ;p

This does not amount to sedition as he only angered the Singaporean citizens but not sowing discord among citizens. What will happen to him likely is he will be gone soon. His EP will most likely not be renewed and his company knows that. Chances are his company might terminate him and send his bum back to UK.

Hi Ray,

That makes sense. If anything, his actions galvanised Singaporeans against him! :)

I guess his wife and his son will have to bear the consequences of his actions. :(

Ray said...

well depends. minority (those slightly more radical) will simply jump on the story and hate all rich people (including our very rich ministers) but majority of SG are not that green-eyed. Besides, tell me you've never seen a snobbish rich man? Everyone of us surely has so it's not going to really make Singaporeans hate one another. :)

BTW, is it me or does the wife (Bernice Wong) look like a stereotypical sarong party girl? oh well, he can bring his talents and family back to wherever he wish to go next but as long as he doesn't change, no country would welcome him.

AK71 said...

Hi Ray,

To tell you the truth, the very rich people I know are not snobbish. Usually, the snobbish ones are those who have a bit more money than regular folks. Well, perhaps the rich people I know are not representative since I don't know very many. ;p

I feel the same way about the wife but just didn't say it. After all, the issue is about him and his behaviour. :)

I hope he changes. It will not only be good for him, it will be good for his young son.

Casey's boss, Christophe Audergon, said the comments were "in poor taste".

In a statement, he said: "Crossinvest has clear policies regarding the codes of conduct expected of its employees. That code of conduct extends to social media. We are currently investigating the comments made by our employee and will take appropriate action once we are in possession of all the facts."

Well I agree with Patty. This asshole speaks his mind online and was caught. He is not the first and won't be the last. Obviously still think British rules SG. His 'apology' via the spin doctor is hardly sincere. Money cannot buy apology.

I had a formerly boss (yes he is British) who thinks he is better than most and hire mainly FTs. He need a SG director to do his powerpoint presentations!

Mr Casey will need to face the music squarely and hopefully he can still work in the same firm but in LONDON.

AK71 said...

Hi Chris,

Yes, I agree. People like Mr. Anton Casey belong to the colonial era. There is no place for white supremacy in the world today. Was there ever a place for a mindset like this, anyway?

I would be very surprised if he gets to keep his job. Would be bad for the image of the employer if he were allowed to stay.
