Why I don't feel proud to be Singaporean?

Friday, January 17, 2014

It is unfortunate but sometimes very smart people can become quite dumb in certain instances.

Unfortunate but true.

Then again, we have to ask if it is a matter of fact or a matter of opinion.

If it is the latter, then, maybe the smart person is not dumb.

Maybe, he or she is just different.

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about a certain Miss Stephanie Koh who declared that she is not proud to be a Singaporean.

She was eloquent in her complaint and according to a friend, Patrick, it seems that she just hates Singaporeans.

I am sharing Patrick's observation here in my blog:

What irks me is that people are interpreting it as some kind of political message.

There is no political meaning.

There is no pro or anti message.

She just dislikes Singaporeans. Period.

What's there to support if all there is is hate?

Her points summarized by
https://www.facebook.com/notes/robin-rheaume/stephanie-koh-why-i-am-not-proud-to-be-singaporean/10151936357538920

It's no place for an artist (2:02)
Singaporeans are narrow minded (3:19)
Singaporeans are not creative (4:05)
Singaporeans are submissive (6:58)
Singaporeans are not happy (7:24)
Singaporeans are not nice (9:00)
Everyone just follows the rules (11:56)

Yikes!

Sounds like a young lady full of angst and on a war path.

My take?

Why doesn't she do anything about the situation.

Don't just complain.

Or is she complaining and waiting for someone to do something (which, by the way, sounds very Singaporean to me)?

Then, we have people who agree with her either in part or in whole.

To people who don't agree with her, these people who do would appear stupid, of course.

When topics become very socially divisive and there are so many examples in the world of these, I can safely say that they are really a matter of opinion and not facts.

So, one could say that Miss Stephanie Koh is opinionated but who could say for sure whether she is right or wrong?

Happy can liao lor.

Oops, I forgot, she is not.

Maybe she should watch this:

Be Happy!

AK is opinionated?

So?

You don't make me angry, ok?

"I'll attack you, I'll scratch you and I'll kill you!"

Hi Pat,

Thanks for this. :)

I just read this morning that a prominent local investment blogger thinks that these are stupid examples. Of course, he is entitled to his opinion. ;p

My take is she just wanna to sensationalize issues so that there will be traffic to her Facebook or people reply to her.

If not, I dun like a fellow Singaporean like her. What an conincidence, I just told my pupils everyone has their rights to their opinion, but to express in manner that is offensive or intrude into other people spaces is just plain rude. Not everyone agree with your opinion, keep it to yourself unless solicited. Or u can talk about it in a private manner.

Her manner in raving in a public platform (anyone who think Facebook is private has screws in his head) is not artistic (art is a high level of doing things), not nice, not creative. Everyone rave and complain, so highly not creative.

She needs 2 things. One, a mirror. Two, someone guiding her to migration procedures at ICA.

Yup, I am nasty in my words, judemental too. I can live with it, hope she can too.

This can be a authentic teaching materials. Thank you.

Hi Mike,

This comment has shown me a different side of you. LOL. Seriously. :)

I have always had this impression that you are a mild mannered diplomat. Don't ask me why. ;p

I feel that her parents should do something about it too. They must take responsibility for how she has turned out. Or are they proud of her behaviour?

In the past or maybe, even now, some people might say "mei you jia jiao".

"I will attack you! I will scratch you! I will kill you!"

And not an ounce of remorse...

OK, I am judgemental too. Bad AK! Bad AK! -.-

Wow!! LOL! Mild manner diplomat, I like this description. YOu make my day.

Hahahaha... My wife will laugh her head off when she see the word mild-mannered.

So sad right, online and offline so different... hehehe

Hi Mike,

Yikes! Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. :o

LOL.

I am the same on and offline. ;)

You try to stay online more, ok? Good for you. ;p

Singapore has reasons for its citizens to be both proud and not proud of it. Should one feel strongly ashamed about Singapore, there is always the option to renounce his/her citizenship...or attempt active citizenry to make the country a better one. All talk and no action only makes one an airhead.

Hi E H,

I agree that if one is full of shame about something, why hold on to it? Should throw it away and as far away as possible too. ;p

if she lives around the world for sometime, then her opinion should be more convincing. eg. Africa, even Thailand.

Hi Ah John,

A friend went to work in Taiwan for only a year. Came back to Singapore and became very patriotic! ;)

Too much effort has been put in complaining this and that.

Our pioneers success is built on their attitude, hardworking and resilience.

I am not sure if the future success could be built on complaining and blaming alone.

Complaining that a fresh poly graduate can not meet the CPF minimum sum?

CPF is just a retirement scheme, if you cannot even plan to achieve the minimum sum, and start complaining before you workout a plan to meet it, seriously, you are in deep trouble.

Not financially but your attitude on how you handle challenges.

What will be the rest of your life?

If you speak to the younger generations, they don't seemed to care too much on government front.

It is the middle aged and those older ones that complained a lot.
