"Women are like the rake in poker."

Sunday, April 23, 2017

I was chatting with a reader on FB about saving money and I gave him a link to one of my old blogs: http://singaporeanstocksinvestor.blogspot.sg/2011/12/common-piece-of-advice-on-saving.html

I was scrolling through the comments section and found this:

Reader: Hah, while I definitely agree with what you say about the tips on drinking water from coolers, for the large part, it is a very male perspective. Women are like the rake in poker, once you are dating/married, its not easy to get the lady to agree on such things. They like to eat at fancy restaurants and so on and so forth. Once that happens, its not easy to save.

AK: I think a third or at least a quarter of my readers are females. Ahem... I am not going there. ;p

I don't know how many of us guys have faced or are facing this issue.

Of course, if we are the "OK with spending money" type, I don't think this is really an issue but if we are the "AK the giamsiap fellow" type, then, it could be a problem.

For those of us who don't have the ability or the willingness to spend big money on dates, what do we do?

For me, it is quite simple, junk the date! No date, no problem.

Remember those days?

OMG! There is a website that teaches girls how to make guys buy stuff for them!

"How To Get A Man To Buy Me Things."

Guys, be careful. OK, since the video says click on the link for more advanced tips, maybe, girls should be careful too.

Now, I am going into hiding.

Don't understand why guys r so stingy. It doesn't have to be like that. I don't know abt other girls but I find that gg to a restaurant is easier for dating. Once I went on a date at a hawker center, shared table with a middle age couple. The middle age couple complained we were talking too loudly. -_-"

What is a nice cheap date for guys?

AK71 said...

Hi pf,

I am sure that there are guys who are not cheap like me lah. ;p

Hi temperament,

I like the message!

There is always HOPE! ;p

Stingy? ._. If one wishes to chat, there are other more appropriate places to do so. Must it be at a restaurant? Also, one bad experience at a hawker centre = restaurant better?

@AK71: actually I'm more drastic. I told my colleague that I would never marry without a prenup. Even more so if I had assets like yours. Over CNY my aunts were teaching daughters/nieces in front of their husbands that; your (daughter's) money is their money. Future bf/husband's money also theirs. My god. Neverending pit of greed. Makes me wonder what girls are really after when they marry. Too much protection through woman's charter - little/no recourse for men...except prenup.

My turn to hide lol!

Girl spendthrift, guy scared.
Girl make more money, guy also scared.
Girl wants to pay, some guys let girl pay. Girl unhappy. Some guys not happy that girl pays.

V sian. Guys useless. Give up.

Hi simplyme,

When I read that Donald Trump always had a prenup, I thought it made sense because how could he tell if the girl was after his wealth or not? Then, I wondered why did the girls marry him since a prenup showed that he didn't trust them? I blur. ;p

Hi pf,

Actually, it would be a good thing if my hypothetical wife was much richer than I am. When Madonna and Guy got a divorce, she paid him an alimony or so I was told. LOL.

simplyme said...

@AK71: while a prenup prevents wholesale grabbing of assets in the event of a divorce, it doesn't prevent the guy from spending $ on his gf/wife. I.e. I'm not sure why people view it as a marriage barrier. It's a divorce barrier. If the girl is very sure that she won't ever divorce him then there's no issue with a prenup. Of course they can be super scheming and leech out the assets during the course of marriage.

Aiyo, why the focus on the prenup? I also mentioned terrible advice (on how to view household income) given by mothers to their daughters. Why no one focus on that.

Go to the F&B outlets whereby you are a retail investor. They make money they reward shareholders and you earn yourself a date too. Problem solved! :P

AK71 said...

Hi simplyme,

You make it sound so scary lor. LOL.

I don't know why but prenup just got my attention. ;p

AK71 said...

Hi Kevin,

Alamak, still, it is not as if it is free of cost, you know? ;p

Also, I dunno if the girl would like munching on OCK curry puffs on each and every date. LOL.

Bad AK! Bad AK!

@simplyme
This is not lawyer advice but I believe that prenups are not foolproof and the court can decide how enforceable it is (in Singapore). I think marriage as a whole is quite risky. The laws can be quite biased towards one side (guess who). If the couple really love each other, they need to think hard and long about the purpose of marriage and ultimately who really benefits from it. IMHO, marriage is not about love.

@AK
What about the 2/3 or 3/4 of your readers who are guys? :P I think your advice is spot on. I have went on dates to hawker centres, free exhibitions, nature trails and if the girl does not like it, she can find some other guy because obviously our values are different. It's not about being stingy or not but rather realising what are the truly important things in life.

Now I shall go into hiding......

Hi owq,

Alamak. You don't like that say hor? Simi advice is spot on?

I am only talking to myself here in my blog hor. -.-"

You are right about prenups. I have been advised: How do I protect my assets before marriage?
