Tea with AK71: Casio watch and The Price is Right!

In my last Tea with AK71 blog post which was about a vintage Rolex watch, I revealed in the comments section that I travel with a Casio watch. In case you think that it is a digital watch, think again.

I have not bought a digital watch since my Smash watch died years ago. I rather prefer analogue as they seem to harken back to the good old days.

My travelling companion.

I bought this watch because it just looks so clean and its bezel looks like a Rolex. How much, you ask? Let's play a game. Why not make a guess and leave your answer in the comments section?

We will see whose answer is the closest to the actual price I paid for the watch. Reminds me of the game show, The Price is Right!

  4. Hi Mark,

You do realise this is the blog post on my Casio and not the vintage Rolex, don't you? ;-p

  5. Hi AK,

Looks like the MTP-1302D-7A2VDF (CN) Silver model. This looks like a rather old model, retailing online at anything from 40sgd to 80 sgd. I guess you'll be getting it at around 50 sgd :)

  9. Hi Kelvin, Dolly&Zoopy, yeh, LoveLocks, hjteo and Kim,

Thanks for the tikams! We have a total of 9 tikams now but I think thanks to LP, I might have to reveal the answer before we reach 10 tikams. Haha..

  10. Hi LP,

Aiyoh, this is a game leh. Just gut feel based on the looks of the watch lah. Cannot cheat and do research first.

I should have included terms and conditions in the blog post. Stating eligibility alone not enough. Hahaha...

I was so happy when meesiam guessed $120. ;p

    The answer: S$49.

Your diligence (but I still think it is cheating) is impressive! You win! ;)

It is a nice looking watch with a nice looking price hor?

  11. Hi AK
May I know which year you bought it? S$49 at present seems a very good bargain to me. :-)

  12. Hi Zhang Zheng,

I bought it about two years ago from G-Factory in Parco, Millenia Walk. G-Factory has a chain of stores and their prices for CASIO watches are better than CityChain's.

Aiyoh, I just provided them with free advertising! Hahaha..

They had a few models and I was surprised at the prices. I also did not know that CASIO produced such watches. Mention CASIO and I would think of digital watches usually. Just like any CASIO though, it keeps perfect time!

G-Factory usually has a showcase which would display older models with heavily discounted prices. If you like old stuff like me, take a look at those. ;p

  13. It's over??

It's a timely post as I intend to get a watch - preferably analog one.

Wishing AK and all readers a Happy New Year!

  14. Hi Derek,

If you are referring to the game, yes. LP provided a price range with his research and game over. ;p

If you did not know the price like you do now, how much would you have guessed the price to be?

Actually, I had no intention of buying a watch that day. I was there with a friend who was looking for a watch. However, this watch kind of called out to me and when I saw the price, it was a done deal!

If it is not good value, I don't buy (usually). ;p

  15. AK

i overpaid for your watch, i should have guessed lower since you are a bargain hunter. ..hai ...still a long way to go as a "value" investor :( Btw, Brash Basah offer good bargain for Casio watch also.

  16. Hi meesiam,

Yikes! I remember Bras Basah as a place I went to as a boy with my mom to buy school textbooks! Quite stressful. Haha..

Actually, I am more pleased with my purchase of the vintage Rolex watch recently. Of course, with antiques, value is in the eye of the beholder. ;p

  17. Hi Ak,

Haha, I'm always serious about having fun in a game :)

Good bargain that you got for the watch! I'm also wearing my good ol' digital casio watch. I prefer digital because it's more precise and it comes with light and stopwatch - both functions that I can't live without :)

  18. Hi LP,

Too serious and we take the fun out of a game. Haha.. ;p

If you need a light and stopwatch function, yes, it is definitely more practical to have a digital watch.

My purchase of a G-SHOCK in my NS days was due to utilitarian considerations too. Definitely not because it was attractive looking which it wasn't. Then again, beauty is a subjective thing. ;)

  20. Hi hjteo,

Is that a Casio too? For S$4 more, I would buy locally. ;p

Actually, there is a nice dress watch which I saw online for less than US$20. OEM in China. Free shipping globally!

Maybe, I will put up a link later in this blog post. ;p

  21. Hi Ask,
That is for a Casio too. For a few dollars, buying local comes with warranty as well unless the buyer only want to shop without getting out of the house. :-)

    Blessed New Year!

  22. Hi hjteo,

Oh, definitely. Local support is worth the extra S$4. :)
