However, even if we spend hours each day doing something, we might not be very professional about it. So, we could remain amateurs. This stands to reason too.
AK is an amateur this and an amateur that in retirement.
I do the things I enjoy but I am not necessarily good at them.
It is about having fun and not making a living.
So, I am not going to set professional targets or high standards. Just thinking about doing this is stressful.
Naturally, this is how I treat gardening as a past time too. For an amateur gardener, I think I have done OK.
To be honest, it is probably because I have mostly chosen plants which are easier to grow.
Yes, AK is a lazy fellow and always likes options which have lesser resistance.
A friend told me that it is too difficult to grow Lavender in Singapore because the weather is too warm.
Then, a friend told me that it is impossible for Lavender to flower in Singapore because it is too warm.
I would need to have a cool environment like in the Flower Dome in Gardens by the Bay for Lavender to bloom.
I told him I didn't know that and, by the way, I think my Lavender plant might just be flowering:

Apparently, your friends who advised you are even more amateur than you. An online search will show lots of websites that dwell on growing lavender in SG.

ReplyDeleteI simply bought the seeds, dropped them in some potting mix, watered regularly and voila! ;p
A very analogy using gardening as an example to highlight the beliefs and mindsets of investors here.
ReplyDeletePerhaps, you started with low or minimal expectations and treat it as a hobby and have no pressure of its outcome but with your TLC, the lavender blossom. Likewise, you take this attitude towards your investment, one that gives you returns that aligns with your lifestyle without spending numerous hours analysing the stocks.
My takeaway is every gardener is different and to compare whose garden is prettier or better serves little or no value since the outcome that we want is not the same as well. The important thing is to be able to smell the roses and enjoy the kind of lifestyle we want.

I was eating an orange one day and it was really sweet and juicy. So sweet and juicy that a thought came to me, if I planted this I could harvest its fruits in time to come (many, many years later)
ReplyDeleteSo I dropped 3 seeds into the soil to germinate and waited. Nothing. happened. I had pushed the seed much deeper into the soil than I should and I knew whatever was happening underneath the soil.I should not disturb it, let nature takes it course ya.
Now and then I would diligently water the soil and one day, after several weeks...I saw a shoot. The orange plant actually grew!! When it was bigger, I transferred it and realize the plant while small and short on the surface had a good base of roots. What I gathered from my experience after reading your post on growing lavender was Investing is like that too. Once you buy that stock/company, nothing might be happening ..no news no spikes but your money is working. Just have to be patient.
