After "After Earth"?

Sunday, June 16, 2013

I just found out that "After Earth" is a box office flop. Is it that bad? I was thinking of watching it.

Apparently, Will Smith is quite affected and has decided to quit acting in blockbusters. This movie was his project and his son was the co-star.

I thought the movie trailers look quite good.

Not bad, right? I like the theme.

I have always enjoyed movies which are based on some kind of scientific theory. For example, a movie which I enjoyed a lot was "The Day After Tomorrow".

I feel that the extreme weather conditions we are seeing in the world today definitely has to do with climate change and the movie gave a glimpse of what could happen eventually. See: Just storms?

If you like sci-fi, you should watched it. I enjoyed the movie but my wife commented after the show "THAT's IT?!?!?"

Ok, movie's a bit short and also weak on the story. Also, is more like a 2-person drama...... So can't say it qualifies for a blockbuster. Feels like a small scale movie. Enjoyable nonetheless

Didn't know that's Will Smith's son. I watched it mainly coz is (a) Sci-Fi (b) Will Smith

It is quite a nice movie. Watched at Malaysia at a discount.

No doubt tropical climate will be affected but less severe than those in northern or southern hemisphere. I am more concerned of raising sea levels on our shorelines.

Hi sgdigital,

OK, I am going to watch it! I rather trust a guy when it comes to movies like this. Thanks. ;p

Hi Tien,

Lucky you! ;)

Hi INVS 2.0,

I think the Marina Barrage was built with future sea level rise in mind. Don't stay too close to the shores and stay higher up. ;)

I like the movie and find the film too short. Need to be 3 hrs long !

Big time director Spielberg and Lucas had said last week our preoccupation with sci-fi and cartoon big budget movies will kill the movie industry.

Spielberg was lamenting that people are paying USD25 to see Ironman3 but not willing to fork out USD7 to see "Lincoln".

This trend with big budget movies is killing smaller budget movies and all it takes are a few biggies to flop and the industry will turn upside down.

At 250million a pop, 4 failures will means a loss of USD1 billion and this scale of failure will kill the big studios.

i am guilty of this trend also as i usually will watch the biggies in the cinema and the smaller budgets on DVD.

Well, like share market, this is the trend. Movie studios like us small investors will ride the trend for all its worth. After this what is there? I don't know..

Hi Cory,

Another rousing endorsement, I see. Hahaha... Wonder why was the movie a box office flop. Hmmm..

Hi seefei,

Well, I am sure there are darlings in every industry just like we have market darlings in the stock market.

In my line of work, I see it too. Something might have better specs but people end up buying something which is visually more pleasing but less sophisticated. ;)

The haze in Singapore climbed into the unhealthy range on Monday afternoon as the three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit 111 at 6pm. The reading went beyond the 100 mark at 2pm.

Conditions have been visibly hazy and a strong burning smell had been detected across many parts of Singapore since last Friday. Hazy conditions are expected to persist for the next few days.

Hi Garfield,

Really? Oh, I really shouldn't... Thanks. ;)

The haze that shrouded Singapore yesterday was the worst in 16 years, and is expected to last for most of this week.

The three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI), which measures air quality, climbed steadily throughout yesterday, reaching a high of 155 by 10pm, crossing into the unhealthy range.
