Genmaicha.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

I drink green tea regularly. It is an inexpensive and healthy drink with antioxidants, not the sweetened types sold in cans and bottles, of course.

Then, I was introduced to Genmaicha a few years ago at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Very nice!

What is Genmaicha? Green tea with roasted brown rice.

This type of tea was originally drunk by poor Japanese, as the rice served as a filler and reduced the price of the tea; which is why it is also known as the "people's tea." It was also used by those persons fasting for religious purposes or who found themselves to be between meals for long periods of time.

Today, instead of buying my regular OSK green tea from NTUC Fairprice, I bought a box of Genmaicha. 50 satchets for only S$5.95.

Made in Japan and not by its neighbour.

Individually packed.

Nice color.

Will provide me with weeks of drinking pleasure without the atas pricing of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. That makes me happy!

I prefer mugicha or roasted barley tea cause genmaicha taste a bit like porridge to me.

A bag of 50 satchets cost around $8 in Cold Storage but each satchet can be used for up to 3l of hot or cold water.

Ooooh, I like barley. Must try this next. Thanks! :)

try green tea with 1 equal sweetener.
once cooled chill it till almost freezing.
excellent.

Hi outsider,

I was told to stay away from artificial sweeteners. Apparently, they are also bad for my eyes which are very dry. :(

i love sweet drinks and i m diabetic.
used to drink pokka green tea 1.5 litres a day plus coke plus others.

so this green tea with 1 sweetener or wothout sweetener is fine too.

no side effect of dryness in my eyes.
i take sweeteners without my 2 coffee everyday too.

Hi outsider,

My eyes are naturally dry. Tear test shows zero tears. They are that dry. They are also very red most of the time. :(

Anyway, I am trying hard to cut back on sugars but I have a sweet tooth. Sigh.

I haven't had ice cream in many weeks but I still eat chocolates regularly. I will have to try harder.

My grandfather was diabetic. So, I think I might be in a high risk group. Better be careful. :(

Thanks for the suggestion on the gourmet tea freeze. ;)

HI AK,

I tried to find this green tea from cold storage but they dont have. Where did you buy them? What is the brand? I love hot green tea. Sorry for the stupid questions.

Hi Unknown,

Cold Storage is probably too atas to stock this tea for poor people. ;p

I got this from NTUC Fairprice. Brand is "HARADA".

Thanks Ak, I love this tea also but couldn't find in the ntuc near my place.

Regards,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

NTUC Fairprice had a sale on this recently and it could be sold out. :(

I got mine from NTUC Fairprice in Lot 1 in CCK. Just made myself a cup actually. :)
