Life is about many things and my time is in short supply (Some of the things I do in retirement).

Sunday, November 29, 2015

I have been spending less time blogging and it will probably stay like this for a while more.

The primary reason is that I have become more introspective lately. I have been spending more time meditating, gardening and going back to doing some yoga. I have also been eating differently, following a diet which is very different from what I was used to.

Gardening is a good and inexpensive hobby. Growing plants also means that I am doing my bit for the environment. I fancy myself to be a bit of an environmentalist and recycle whatever I can.

As with all new hobbies, learning about gardening takes up quite a bit of my time. I am learning new things all the time about plants.
I enjoy spending time in my little outdoor space with my plants.

In the evening, it is rather calming, especially this time of the year. There is always a cool breeze and with soft lighting, it is a perfect spot for meditation. Before I knew it, I had lost an hour just sitting there.

Rosemary seedlings.

My planter must be enchanted.

Catnip grows really well from seeds.

As for my new diet, it demands much more attention from me. It is not as convenient as what I was used to.

So, I end up having to spend more time preparing my own meals, more than before. The selection process is really a learning experience.

It is hard to have no carbohydrate and no sugar in my diet. The best I can do is to try to have as little carbohydrate and as little sugar as possible. It is about being more careful.

The results have been encouraging so far and I will probably blog about the initial success of my diet a bit more in a separate blog post.

Tuna, eggs and lettuce.

Oh, I should mention that I have been spending more time visiting doctors, doing check ups and stuff. It is only prudent since I am past 40.

Frankly, there are certain health issues which probably should have been addressed years ago but I had swept them under the carpet as they were not life threatening (and I didn't want to spend the money, ahem).

For exercise, I continue to take long walks which I do usually in the evenings. I like taking in the sights on such walks.

Today, I decided to go for a morning walk instead and there were reminders everywhere that Christmas is just round the corner.

Hi AK, its good to place more focus on one's health especially when our body is not as young as before. Our selection of food is very important. Anyway, welcome to the LCHF (Low Carbs High Fat) club!

Gallen

Hi Gallen,

I put on a pair of trousers I bought over the Chinese New Year and was amazed to find it rather loose. I have lost at least an inch or more around the waist.

I think I am on the LCLS (Low Carb Low Sugar) diet. I take more protein and greens but I am still a bit wary of having too much fats although my fat intake has definitely increased. ;p

Hi Sun,

I don't know if I am going to blog about health related issues but I will blog about one thing or another. ;p

I don't think I will ever stop blogging but I might do it less frequently. Talking to myself is an incurable illness. -.-"

Hi AK,

Its normal to worry about too much natural fats intake as we are taught by conventional knowledge that fat is bad and carbs is good for our body. You can read more from Mark's Daily Apple and Diet Doctor whose websites provide a lot of good knowledge on LCHF. I once lost weight from 74Kg to 65Kg on LCHF lifestyle and even did a blood test and everything is good. :)

Gallen

Hi Gallen,

Thanks for the assurance. :)

My weight at my leanest and that was probably when I was doing my BMT in NS was about 65 kgs. I was very lean but looked unhealthy. LOL.

The top of my healthy weight is 70 kgs according to BMI for us Asians which says a BMI of 23 is the max we should have. Beyond that, we are overweight. So, I am working towards that.

I have lost 3 kgs or so 4 weeks into the diet. Another 4 kgs to lose. ;p

Hi AK,

Yes, a range of hobbies is such an enrichment to life and they don't have to be expensive. I also like gardening, a hobby I NEVER imagined I would like when I was younger.

If I may paraphrase & reword one of my favourite authors lin yu tang ... There is nothing that man enjoys more than leisure, and this does not mean that one simply does nothing during that time. Leisure enables one to read, to travel, to form beneficial friendships, to drink tea, to do gardening. What greater pleasure in the world can there be but these?

Hi Blue Willow,

Like you, I did not think I would adopt gardening as a hobby when I was much younger. I guess I have truly grown older. LOL. ;p

Great result AK71, (ie weight loss of 3 kg in 4 weeks) from your change in diet away from carbs and sugar. If only more people realise the dangers of overeating and, esp, overeating on carbs and sugar. The obvious food culprits to eject from our diets are sugary beverages (Coke, etc) and fast food (KFC, McD, BK, etc). As we say, your health is your wealth. Hi CT,

Well, it is not just that too much carbs and sugars is bad for us but what surprised me is that fats is good for us! So, now that I stay away from carbs and sugars, I can eat a bit more fatty meat and I still don't put on weight. I am a convert. :)
