I was chatting with a reader on FB and I said how I prefer the newspapers in paper form and not digital form.
I am very old fashioned. I like to be able to make notes in the margins, underline, tick or cross sections and sometimes draw funny faces (yes, I like to think that this is old fashioned too).
This is a reason why I really dislike annual reports being sent to me in CDs! See these?
I like to be able to do this:
This is quite clean actually. For some annual reports, I could write paragraphs, penning down my thoughts while they are still fresh in my mind.
I have grown more forgetful of late and I am more easily distracted too. So, it is important that I pen my thoughts down quickly.
Annual reports in CDs? They are really off putting for me.

Hi Assi
I do not know when was the last time i actually need to insert the disc into my disk drive.
I believe many people fall into this too as almost anything/information could possibly get it through the internet .
I do also like a hardcopy books as "sense" of having phyiscal thing when evaluating something serious/important .
Hi STI,
Wow! Your initials, I like! ;)
Yes, I prefer a print anytime. Digital formats are OK up to a point but nothing can replace print. Old man lah.
Actually print are good.
I find print and hard copy more easier to take notes
I have a few ebooks, but after awhile I purchase hard copies of them haha.
Hi Solace,
You sound like another ageing fellow. Admit it, stop making excuses. LOL. ;p
They should just send you an URL. Cheaper.
Hi AK,
You request for hard copy for subsequent annual reports by filling up the form that comes with the annual reports.
Hi E H,
So, since they want to save money, might as well send us an email with a URL? Yikes! Don't let them see this. -.-"
Hi Matthew,
Yes, I know but it is something that has to be done yearly and I hate filling out forms. Sigh.
Usually, I start going through the ARs on weekends. Sometimes, I miss the deadline for requesting for a printed copy.
Taking everything into consideration, I would rather have the printed copy from the onset. -.-"
I always ask for hardcopies of annual reports.
Main reason is that I find them to be excellent reading material when I am in the toilet.
I could of course bring an ipad to the toilet but there is too much risk there. =)
Hi Kelvin,
It takes me, sometimes, an hour or two to go through an AR. I cannot imagine sitting on the commode for that long! Might get piles! ;p
Good idea! The listed companies should send us URL hyperlink reports via email. They save money on hard copies as well on the CDs and at the same time go green, dont print.
Your post reminds me of a similar sort of trend that is prevalent in our society today: that is many youngsters are now turning to online media news sites to obtain their latest doeses of news rather than getting news by picking up a copy of a newspaper.
This is a trend that is now affecting our daily lives, albeit perhaps in small ways, given that you now have to make the additional effort to request from companies to mail you a hardcopy annual report whereas this would not be the case say, 5-10 years ago.
Hi Sun,
Yup, everything that could be digitised will be digitised. Anything that could be purchased online will see increasing percentage of transactions made online. This is the trend.
When analysing businesses, it is sometimes important to consider this reality too.
hi AK,
Save the environment(trees) you know ;) There are apps that allow you to make notes on the digital copies too. Like some ppl like to remind us: get out of your comfort zone once in a while :D
Hi aceirus,
Who? Who? So silly to get out of comfort zone. Give me a comfortable armchair or bed anytime and I show you my reluctance to get up. -.-"
