I just watched "The Iron Lady" in which Meryl Streep plays Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the powerful former leader of Great Britain. Meryl Streep's performance was entrancing and she got the accent down pat!
It was a sad movie in the end but it was a sadness with an air of dignity.
Many things that Baroness Margaret Thatcher stood for in the movie resonated with me and I feel that Singaporeans or anyone, for that matter, would benefit from her wisdom.
This left the deepest impression on me:
“What I do think is a man should be encouraged to stand on his own two feet. Yes, we help people. Of course we help people, but for those who can do, they must just get up and do. And if something’s wrong, they shouldn’t just whine about it. They should get in there and do something about it. Change things.”
I have, whenever and wherever appropriate, made comments to the same effect.
When people tell me that they are just average people and that they cannot achieve financial freedom, I tell them to stop being average. Be more than average. Often, we are our worst enemies.

Hi AK,
Wanted to watch the movie but never really got the timing just right...
I would have liked that comment too. Never never resign yourself to fate, at least not without giving yourself a good worthy attempt to change it first.
Hi LP,
I also found it hard to find a convenient time slot. It seems that the movie is not very popular.
I saw some other movies like "Skull Rider 2" had many available time slots to choose from. ;p
There are times when I would resign myself to the fact that things have changed and that it is a losing battle to go against that change. Of course, it might not stop me from stubbornly soldiering on at times and I ended up paying the price.
Not making any effort to change our lives for the better, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
Hi Ak71,
Should also watch The King's Speech, on how stammerers live their life under harsh discrimination and how some eventually manage to minimise it and play around the game.
I am also a stammerer, albeit a mild one. This movie is an inspiration. :)
Hi INVS 2.0,
I also suffer from a speech impediment but only in informal speech. I don't have a problem in formal situations.
This tells me that if I pay more attention to my speech and put in more effort, I can overcome the impediment.
"The King's Speech" is a movie I have yet to watch. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Hi Ak71,
I wonder how you managed to live with it for the past few decades?
I only stammer when I am not confident, not mentally prepared, or so many words in mind that I can't say all of them at once. Will experience speech 'blocks' during casual chats. D:
Using the phone is my greatest fear as I stammer heavily on air. That's why I can't do jobs that are purely phone-based. :(
Hi INVS 2.0,
It is not a serious issue for me. Very mild impediment. No problem expressing myself at all. Certain words at certain times gets stuck in my throat. Trick is not to try and force it out. Stop for a while and try again. Slowly does it. :)
Hi Ak71,
Sure we both are not natural stammerers, just some point in life which we unfortunately caught this speech 'disease'.
It always come to me when I am not comfortable with something, even calling someone's name is a difficult. But when I have enough comfort and confidence, the stammering is completely gone. :(
That's why when I work long enough in a workplace, my stammering usually improves as I grow closer with my colleagues. :)
Hi INVS 2.0,
You are absolutely right. I only started stammering in primary 4 or 5. Don't know why it started. Oh well. Apart from some embarrassing moments, it is not too bad. :)
Hi Ak71,
Oh well, I suppose my condition is a worse one than yours. But life has to go on. Hope it won't become my road block to job interviews, promotions and daily communications in the future. :X
Hi AK71,
With my ITE(It's The End education, if i did not think i can stand on my own two feet, i wouldn't be here writing in your blog.
"God helps those who help themselves". In short, God is unlikely to help you if you don't move your backsides. Or you must show you want something first (badly), before the world will give you anything.
Hi INVS 2.0,
If it is not a problem which you can resolve on your own, you might want to seek help.
For me, I realise that if I slow down and speak slowly, the problem goes away. Of course, I must overcome the problem of being a fast talker first.
So, try and see if what works for me would work for you. :)
Hi Temperament,
You have the "can do" attitude which I find in my dad. Good on you. :)
I too believe that we should help people to help themselves. The exceptions would be those who are severely handicapped.
We should be compassionate but we should not be confused as to how best to help people.
