Cutting Alibaba and investing for income.

Friday, March 11, 2022

The reader who invested in Alibaba at $220 a share has thrown in the towel.

He now wants to invest for income to recoup his rather massive losses.

If you do not know what I am talking about, you might have missed this blog:

Invest in Alibaba? High risk, high reward?

AK says:

Investing for income is not about getting rich fast.

It is more about getting rich slow.

It definitely isn't sexy and it can even be boring.

I have a weak heart.

So, boring isn't a bad thing.

What is investing for income?

In a nutshell, look for bona fide income producing assets and pay a fair price for them.

Of course, if we can pay an unfair price for them by paying less than what they are worth, even better.

Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it could well be too good to be true.

$71,000 in alternative or bogus investment?

I know some people are losing more than money as stock prices plunge.

Some are losing their minds especially those who are speculating or investing with money they cannot afford to lose.

If we are investing for income, we should be less concerned with prices but more concerned with value.

Buy income generating assets at prices which make sense to us.

Do not chase rising prices.

Do not fear falling prices.

Do it right and we will be rewarded over time.

If AK can do it, so can you!

full of wisdoms, but sometimes we are tempted to buy those high flying stocks and suffering starts from there! How can we resist that temptation? :-)

Hi James,

Alas, we are only human.

I am so tempted to have some ice cream now.

Very cham. (TmT)

I thot Warren Buffett closest partner Charlie Munger had bet & invested quite signifantly in AliBaBa. Am sure he had suffered big losses too. It goes to show only the rich can dollar cost average down heavily. Even then he had actually lost in value.

Warren Buffett closest partner Charlie Munger had bet & invested substantially in AliBaBa. It goes to show that only the super rich can dollar cost average down heavily. Even then he had actually lost more by going in big.

Hi P,

Not many people have the resources that Charlie Munger has, for sure. :)

I am only interested with what AK71 kor kor buy and not charlie or munger.

What you think of adding more CLCT at current price

AK71 said...

Hi SgFire,

Everything else being equal, CLCT at $1.15 is a pretty good deal for anyone who would like some exposure.

As this is only very slightly lower than the prices I paid in 4Q 2020, I am not in a hurry to add to my position.

Is it wise to sell CLCT at a lost and switch to buy OCBC for coming dividend and hopefully future growth?
I thank you for speaking to yourself on this

AK71 said...

Hi Dom,

If I were to consider selling one to buy the other, I would ask if OCBC is a better investment than CLCT at their current prices.

I feel that they are both good investments for income in their own way and are not directly comparable.

I blog about when to buy, hold or sell before.

See:
When to BUY, HOLD or SELL?

Ak what say you about ireit given its exposure to Europe?

AK71 said...

Hi Jane,

IREIT's assets are in Spain, France and Germany.

A director just increased his investment in the REIT at 60c a unit.

If the unit price were to fall by another 10 to 15% from here, I would be buying more.

April 11 (Reuters) - Daily Journal Corp (DJCO.O), the publishing and software company where Warren Buffett's business partner Charlie Munger helps oversee investments and until recently was chairman, on Monday said it halved its investment in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd .

In a regulatory filing, the Los Angeles-based company said it owned 300,000 of Alibaba's American depositary shares ("ADS")worth $32.6 million as of March 31, down from 602,060 shares at the end of 2021.
