Tea with AK71: Sambal mooncake.

Monday, August 29, 2011

There was much talk about mooncakes in LP's infamous cbox over at Bully the Bear today.

Fancy having some sambal mooncake at tea time? This must be the most "innovative" mooncake I have ever had.

My parents got this in a box of mooncakes from Star Cruises.

Quite clever the way they separated the spicy centre from the lotus paste, using dried coconut as a wall.

The taste is surprisingly good although for some who do not like spicy food or dried coconut, it might be difficult to accept.

I want to come home! No moon cake in Athens :(

I like the Teochew mooncakes. The green-bean kind. One bite and all the crust comes off.

It's a messy kind of fun! Then sip Tei Guan Yin tea. Ah!

Hi SMOL,

Really? Any chance of you setting up a bakery in Athens specialising in Chinese cakes and cookies? Could be a million dollar idea. ;)

Hi AK71,

I like my mooncake with salted egg. Yummy! ^^

Hi DW,

With one salted egg is just nice, I think. :)

I have always avoided those with 2 or 4 salted eggs if I should be the one buying. Being more expensive aside, they are even more unhealthy. Trying to reduce the guilty feeling here. ;)

I have a friend who says his dad will only eat those with 6 salted eggs! That is like eating, er, salted eggs. No room left in the mooncake for lotus paste, I would imagine. Mind boggling!

6 egg yolks!? wahhhh that's very sinful, but i agree, it's too much yolk. i think about 2-4 yolks is great for the occasional indulgence.. but having said that, even during mid autumn festival, i hardly get to eat mooncakes because i have not come across really yummy ones, in fact, we've been having savory tau sar piahs instead, and we only purchase it from them during the mooncake festival season where they taste best (maybe they added more oil).

i once had the mooncakes that was in this buttery crust just like the ones we see with pineapple tarts... wahhhh hungry and salivating.

Hi Raelynn,

It seems that this blog post has unlocked some craving in you. My apologies. ;p

I am not really into mooncakes and tau sar piah. I will eat if they are available but I won't go out of the way to get some. A quarter of a mooncake is plenty for me.

Perhaps, it is because I am growing older? Taste buds evolving?

These days, I find oatmeal delicious. This is something I would not have said years ago. :)

Hi AK

Wow, sambal mooncakes. Sometimes I think mooncakes are a sign of globalisation, i.e. the stuff that they fill it reflects the wider trends in society. With Singapore having the highest concentration of millionnaires, not surprising that we have birdsnest, durian and other exotic mooncakes!

Enjoy. :-)

Hi Panzer,

Conspicuous consumption! A sign of the times. Tsk tsk. ;)
