Jetstar increased price by 33% in the last one year!

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

In recent years, when I flew budget, I would buy a drink which, although was relatively expensive, provided me with some comfort in the dry air of an airplane cabin.

Well, last week, I discovered that the drinks have gone up 33% in price compared to a year ago!

It was $3.00 before. Now, it is $4.00! Wow!

How many things in our lives have gone up 33% in price in the last one year?

Sometimes it's more value to fly on a full-service carrier. LCC charge extra for luggage, food and even booking fees. I'm always on a constant look out for hidden charges when I fly LCC.

Hi Zi Rong,

You are right, of course. I always compare. :)

Unfortunately, to get roughly the same price on a reputable full service airline for this trip, I would have had to fly at 7am in the morning which means being at the airport at 5am and waking up at 4am! Coming back, the flight is at 1.30am and would arrive in Singapore at 5.15am!

It's almost inhuman! ;p

This is the power of inflation. Can we buy Jetstar shares?

Hi AK,

It's a lot easier to raise prices by a nice round number ($1) than say 30c. Guess the next increase will be 25% to $5! :)

Hi Tien,

33% is definitely a lot more than inflation. Sounds like profiteering to me. ;p

I think Jetstar belongs to Qantas.

Hi kh,

$5 would see me simply bearing with the discomfort of a dry throat. ;p

lucky you were in a plane, if you buy in the middle of a desert, it may sell at $1000! (i know i would sell at that price haha)

condition condition condition...

Hi AK,

Normally what I did is to bring my own water bottle. Inside the waiting room at Changi Airport, there is a water dispenser, so before passing the final security check, I'll normally empty my water bottle and once I'm inside the waiting room, I'll refill my water bottle. That way, I can save up the 4 bucks :)

Hi coconut,

You should be a businessman. -.-"

Hi ryan,

Do they allow this? I thought we have to throw away all our bottles before going through the gate?

if i'm a businessman, in the desert, drink will be on the house!

i will be selling camels.

how long is the journey? if 1 hour, can just tahan for that duration including the waiting time?

If three hours and more, better dont fly budget. The saving is not worth the "suffering".

Hi coconut,

You good! Win liao lor!

Buy 2 camels and get a magic carpet free. ;p

Hi seefei,

It was 3 hours and a bit more. Can lah. Saved $50 compared to a full service airline. Happy. ;)

hmm...can forgo the food/drinks if the distance is short (<4hrs). Just bring along a book to read to keep yourself occupied. Book (free from library) will prove to be a good source of entertainment haha.

Hi wq,

I used to bring a book or a magazine with me when I fly. These days, I bring my iPad (1st Gen and a hand me down from a friend). Multi-functional. ;p

To HK, I would recommend UA. 6AM flight there and 830pm flight back. Max ground time in HK, with decent meal & personal screen and full Krisflyer miles. Just that the return trip is often late due to other HK inbound flights being late.

Oh, the price was about the same as Jetstar. Just don't fly on Friday, Sat & Sun.

Hi SnOOpy168,

6am flight is too early. It means that I would have to be at the airport at 4am. Too tiring.

Given a choice, I rather not disturb my regular routine as much as possible. Old man lah. ;)

As for Krisflyer points, I don't travel as often as I used to. So, I don't bother with any frequent flyer program these days.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. :)
