$1 million investing for income and stair climbing.

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Many years ago, I blogged about climbing stairs to keep fit.

I have not been climbing stairs for almost 3 years because I have been staying at home most of the time.

I could feel my fitness level dropping although I tried doing some aerobic exercises at home during the pandemic.

Stair climbing is just more effective and also efficient.

It is a low impact exercise that is twice as effective as jogging which means we won't destroy our knees.

It is a low impact exercise that is three times more effective than cycling and we don't have to spend money on a bicycle too.

I aim to regain my pre-COVID-19 fitness level in the next few months by climbing stairs twice or thrice per week.

I was doing 90 to 120 floors each time before and that is what I aim to do again.

Now, I am struggling to climb 40 floors.

Exhausted.

I remind myself to be flexible in this exercise and not push myself too hard.

After all, I am somewhat older now.

Buy more from Mr. Market when he is feeling depressed.

Push myself to climb a few more floors when I am feeling good.

AK discovered that talking to himself after climbing 40 floors was hard work as he was feeling rather out of breath:

I mentioned people smoking on the staircase in the video.

Evidence:

Unfortunately, inconsiderate people are everywhere.

Anyway, if you are a smoker, try quitting.

It is so bad for health and expensive too.

Just like making $1 million by investing for income, it is probably not easy but it is not impossible.

Hi AK,

Long time no write. How are u getting on? Hope you continue to climb more steps and also find a hobby that is physically demanding I have been coaching the young ones in a sport, almost everyday. I break I to sweat although I didn't run much. I thought there is no improvement in my fitness.

Yesterday, i decided to take a walk to the mall with me wife. The walk usually takes 10 min and I will break out into cold sweats.

This time, I hardly miss a beat and my weight loss is 8 kg

Definiteky worth the pain

Hello AK! Hope you enjoyed the long weekend. I am celebrating Aidilfitri today. My room used to be on the 3rd floor..climbing up wasn't a problem at all but its the going down the stairs that I dislike. Anyway, are we bracing for a recession in the next two years..wondering aloud..

You not alone. I too had feel my body weakened during the pandemic period. The work from home arrangement made me walk and move around lesser. Those crazy morning and evening rush for bus/train has somewhat kept me in check through the years. Less than 6 months after the lock down, my body start goes haywire. and that led to an increase in medical expenses. Ah.... the limits of mortality.

I got a smoker neighbor, I have to keep my windows closed most of the time to keep out the smell. Sigh, nothing much i can do about it. Their addiction to smoking is too strong to quit easily.

Hi Mike,

Good to hear that you are doing well in the fitness department. :D

Having cold sweat after 10 mins of walking is definitely not a good thing.

Not running much is a good thing though as that is a high impact exercise.

I used to run 5km three times per week when I was much younger and that destroyed my knees.

Enjoy updates from you and hope to hear from you again soon. :)

Hi Rasid,

Selamat Hari Raya! :D

The thing about being retired is that weekends, public holidays and long weekends are not any different from any other day of the year.

I didn't even know there was a public holiday until I checked the stock market and found the prices frozen. -.-"

Oh, I don't go down the stairs.

I would climb all the way to the top floor and take the lift down.

Going down stairs is bad for the knees as that is high impact and it hurts for me.

Recession? PM Lee seems to think so.

If it comes, it comes. -.-"

Hi TDT,

I had to remind myself to eat less during the pandemic after I saw the return of my old friend, happy belly. LOL.

A sedentary lifestyle doesn't need too many calories to maintain.

Yeah, smoking neighbors are the worst.

I had to tell someone not to smoke in the common corridor and I have found cigarette ash on my balcony before too.

Inconsiderate people are everywhere. :(

Hope your fitness level improves now that things are back to "normal." :)

I agree that stair climbing is the best and cost effective exercise

Hi Daniel,

I wish I knew when I was younger.

Then, I wouldn't have done so much running and destroyed my knees. (TmT)

Try this counter intuitive exercise. It works. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/4031012/

I took up cycling since March. It is a joy to have 'wings'. Did a 70km PCN loop where my son navigated and cycle with me. Incorporated exercise by biking to work.

Hi Siew Mun,

Oh, I tried cycling before but slow to see results compared to climbing stairs.

I am also very lazy and the time/effort I must spend to maintain the bike was torture. -.-"

How about hiking? Low impact, free, enjoy fresh air and you get to see the flora and fauna.

AK71 said...

Hi hobbez,

Hiking in Singapore's climate?

Brings back memories of my days in the Army.

No, thank you. ;p

hobbez said...

I know what you mean. Took me a while to get back to going to the forest after army (I think it was 10 years after). Army does that to people and Singapore's climate certainly is hot. Still it can be relatively cool if you do it early in the morning. MacRitchie and Bukit Timah are well shaded and after cooling down through the night, it is still relatively pleasant. Give it a try and you may grow to like it.

Hi hobbez,

Although I get out of bed earlier these days, it probably isn't early enough.

I just got out of bed 20 mins ago, for example. ;p

My mom goes for early morning walks and I mean early.

She asked me to join her before but 6am? No, thanks. -.-"

Still, the idea of an early morning walk isn't bad and I suspect I could get out of bed earlier and earlier as I grow older.

So, I shall keep the idea in my back pocket for now. :)

Haha, I add in climbing stairs to my casual run routine - pretty please with myself until.... omg what?? I climb fourteen floors, AK climbs forty 😜

AK71 said...

Hi Sandra,

Baby steps. No rush. :D

I just did 80 floors yesterday!

Let's all climb stairs for more good years!

Goh Chok Tong should use this as his slogan in next GE. ;p
