Why did AK want an early retirement?

Thursday, August 24, 2017

Hi AK,

Possible to share some of the reasons which led to you opting to retire?

Thks.

Ben

Hi Ben,

I don't want to spend all my life working for money because there are so many things I want to do in life.

My time is limited.

See:

Life is about many things and my time is in short supply.

Don't want to be in a situation where I do not have enough time to do what I want to do.

See:
Financial freedom and not enough time.

I really have so many things that I enjoy doing and I need more time for them.

See:
Preparing for retirement.

Did I work too hard in my younger days and sacrifice too much?

Well, I think achieving financial freedom makes it all worthwhile.

See:
Did I work too hard in my younger days.

Yes, I know.

See:
Financially free AK should be ashamed!

I just come across this article that's related to the topic asked by your reader:

https://limkimtong.wordpress.com/2017/08/24/what-worry-you/

Been reading many bloggers sites lately as many give “正能量" (I've been hearing this Chinese phrase spoken in many Mainland Chinese TV shows the few 2 years, but I've never used it myself till I saw it in your post today).

Hi Laurence,

For the benefit of other readers, let me link this to where the comment was first made:
Comments section here.

"We need not envy others with fat pay cheques or the luxurious lives they lead. Our lives can be meaningful too without the excesses. Remember the goal is to reduce mental stress and to worry less."

I agree. :)

It is difficult not to do a thing which you have spent more than 30 years doing.

The focus and determined effort brought success and with it, familiarity.
To abandon that, is unlikely.

The reality about retirement is that you would probably continue to do what you know
very well. Perhaps with less focus or a shift in focus towards something closely associated.
It might take some time, months or years, but it will happen.

We are creatures of habit.. . and predictable.

Hi veronika,

I guess it could be the case for many people and I blogged about being married to our jobs before. For people who are married to their jobs, if they were to lose their jobs, they would feel quite lost. So, there are people who do not want to retire even though they can afford to. This is not a bad thing for Singapore. ;)

For anyone thinking of retirement, it is important to remember that preparing for retirement is not just about having enough financial resources. It should be a fun filled retirement and not a boring one. :)

Most Singaporeans whom I brought up the topic of retirement do not wish to retire if possible. Including those who have amassed multiple times more than what they would need to spend till their final day. Some pay lip-service by saying "how nice if I could retire like you", or something to that effect but I know they are just TKLSS because in their mind, they do not wish for that to happen.
Many people could not even begin to comprehend that there are people who hated their job (and even their working life) and could not wait to redeem their freedom soonest possible. It's similar to true cases which I've read many times over the years where a husband or wife one day suddenly packed his/her bag and left the family permanently. Those husband/wife had been unhappy with their marriage life but decided to endure the decades till their child grew up before seeking the freedom that they so wanted. Of course, similar cases involving children leaving their parents to gain their freedom abound as well.
And I know exactly how these people felt as I went through such circumstances twice.
There are every type of people with every type of personal circumstances in this world. Some are even beyond our wildest imagination. So, in this 21st Century, everyone of us must refrain from using our own biased pair of spectacles to see others. Because although you will still see a regular-looking human being in front of you, those spectacles of yours will fail to see the background behind this person.

Hi Laurence,

No two people are totally alike. Even twins have their differences, however subtle.

To understand that everyone is different is the first step to a more harmonious world. :)

Ben says...
At that point of time, what did you intend to do in semi-retirement?

AK says...
Spend more time doing what I want to do in retirement, of course.

Only difference between semi and full retirement is that I have even more time to do it now. ;p

Remember this?
http://singaporeanstocksinvestor.blogspot.com/2017/08/why-did-ak-want-early-retirement.html

If we are not prepared for retirement, even if we are financially able to do so, given a choice, it might not be a good idea to retire.

Hi AK,

I am of view that early retirement allows one to have more perspective on the things which he/she wants to embark on their his/her life. Time is of essence and limited. Once it is gone, it cannot be retrieved. It is better to go for early retirement as soon as possible.

Early retirement does not mean doing nothing. Instead, I am of view that early retirement allows one to have fulfillment in life from another angle.

My two cents worth of view.

Hi Ben,

People should have a holistic retirement plan.

A retirement plan that addresses only the financial aspect of retirement is incomplete and cannot be a fulfilling one. ;)

Hi AK,

Early retirement is great. I have seen and heard people having no time to enjoy the free time to do the things of his/her interest after accumulating the sufficient stash which can last a lifetime. My personal take is that it will be worthwhile to quit the the rat race as long as the generated dividend from the investment portfolio can cover one's expense. The rest is the just the number game which is secondary as per my perspective.

Hi WTK,

It is so tragic to have too much money and not enough time.
